The only reliable way without pulling off the cover and counting teeth is to mark the drive shaft and rotate it with one tire off the ground and count the number of driveshaft revolutions it takes to make one turn of the wheel. Jack up both wheels for a posi if your that lucky. You never know if the gears have been changed so you shouldn't trust the tag or door on older models.
