Project Ranger

Took the Ranger to a family friend that has a trans. shop to get the trans. serviced and he said there was alot of metal in fluid when he drained it. He also looked everything over for me to let me know what else needed to be done. Here is what it looks like needs to be replaced.

sway bar bushings
radius arm bushings
carrier bearing
some of the u-joints
and there is either a problem with the front drive shaft or the transfer case.

Hey Mike what is a common upgrade for trans in the ranger? Probably auto.

these won't be to bad to replace

Is your t-case electric shift? If so that is most likely the problem.

Mike

I will check on transmission upgrades. I know a lot of people swap to the c-3 out of older rangers, its a close relative to the c-4. Most swap to a 5 speed manual. Give a couple days and I will have a answer for you.

When you say electric shift do you mean push button 4wd? Mine's got the manual shifter on the floor. He seemed to think the same c3 or c4, bad part is he said awhile back he could have had a c4 out of a BII for free but didn't have the need for it so told the guy he didn't want it.

Actually a C-5 is the swap. It is stronger then the a4ld, but it dont have the overdrive.
They are some what hard to find, I know of 1 in Alanta georga for 450, completely rebuilt and ready to go. I may be going down there to pick up a 4.0, wiring and computer before long. I also know of one in Louisville KY.

Look at wrecker yard for a 1983-84 ranger with the tranny code "w"

I think this will work also (4R55E Code T (1995-1997)(4.0L) 4-speed ) the 4.0 is the same bolt pattern as the 2.9, I am not sure about lenght and what drive shaft hook ups.

For a manula a FM146 is the same lenght as the a4ld and easy to swap in. Thats what i swapped into my BII

forgot to add i screwed up on the c-3 it was offered in 83 and 84 rangers but is weaker then the c-5. c-5 is almost the same as a c-4, most use it because the cases will swap between the 2 making a v8 swap easier.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably won't switch it out until I have to but I wanted to find out what to be looking for in case a good deal pops up. So just to make sure I'm getting what you're saying. The c-5 will bolt in, in place of the a4ld, and can use the same t-case. And will the drive shaft's be the same?
