bad fuel

I was wondering if anyone has ever had this happen. For the last couple weeks my truck has been really loud and sounded like a bad injector knock in it intermittently. After a lot of reading on here and seeing what kind of things may cause this I decided to change the fuel filter, even though it only had 3k on it as it gets changed with every oil change. Also added Deisel kleen to the fuel left in the tank. It still knocked But not quite as bad. I then ran the tank of fuel that I was in the truck down until the low fuel light came on. I then refueled with fuel from a different station. Amazingly within just a few minutes of driving the engine was back to its old self and running like a champ again without any noises and all the power it used to have. I guess when you have 44 gallons of bad fuel it could take some time to get out of the system. Should I change the fuel filter again in a few days just to be sure that it isn't affected by the bad fuel?
Thanks for all the good info here, I believe it just saved me a lot of cash.

The way I look at it, better safe then sorry replace the filter. I would also make sure to drain the fuel filter housing also.

Might have had some gasoline mixed in the diesel causing the knock. It's so hard to know what you're getting when you pull up to the "green" pump. I try and stick with large stations that have a very large volume. Can't always do this but it's easier if you keep thinking about it while driving your diesel. I think, but don't know for sure, that their diesel is less likely to be contaminated.

Heck yes, change the filter. Clean the screen gently with a q-tip too.
Fleet filters (a sponsor) has them cheap.
One and two piece, yer choice. (I'd go with the two piece)

Thanks for the replies. I will change the filter out again as soon as it quites raining here. I buy the filters in quanity so I always have a few on hand. I always drain the housing and clean the screen each time I change them out and then fill the housing about half full with Diesel Kleen. You can bet that I won't be going to that station again for fuel.
