Seal replacement in Gear box

hey guys i have to replace the outer pitman arm seal( i think thats what it is called)...its the seal on the bottom of the gearbox where a shaft comes out and the pitman arm attaches to the shaft)...this is the seal that needs replacing because it is leaking powersteering fluid like it is its job...i was wondering how to do it...my hayes manual tells me nothing on how to replace the seal...i was wondering if anyone has done this and if they could help me along...thanks guys...

Your in luck. I just did this last week end. It is easy, I had to do it 4 times till I got it right. I can do it in 15 min. and so can you.
first if you don't have it... buy a pitman arm puller. about $14 bucks
1. remove nut from pitman arm
2. use puller and remove pitman arm
3. the hard part. clean inside and find snap ring. it is a big snap ring, I had to grind down some needle nose pliers to get it out. get a small hammer and tap it to position it so that your snap ring pliers can get to it. Just get one side of the snap ring out of the grove and take a screw driver and pop it out.
4. start your engine, turn your steering all the way to the left and right. This will blow out the seal. Put a bucket under it to catch the mess.
5. clean with rags and put new seal in with the spring pointing up.
6. put in the dust seal with the extra lip on the inside pointing down.
7. get a flat head punch and tap the seal in till it you can see the grove where the snap ring has to go in.
8. put the snap ring in. This is important. tap with a hammer all around the edge of the snap ring untill you are certain it is all the way in the grove. (this is why I had to do it 4 times. every time I would finnish I would test drive and when I turned real sharp it would blow the snap ring out and seal.)
9. Jack your front end up and remember how much your wheels were turning or straight.
10 position the wheels the same laying on the ground with your sholder on the driver side wheel and your foot on the other wheel. life the pitman arm in place and jiggle till it slides up.
11 Tighten, put in fluid, you are done.
