what matters is you got the barn done so the boss could get on and paint. that's sure to be worth a couple bucks to him next time you guys talk about money.

No, and I learned my lesson. I was making excuses at first because the job was more than I expected because I didn't think and told him I'd do the job without looking at it first. Like I said, I learned my lesson.
However, oil leaking on the manifold is not a pleasant smell, as you probably know by experience.
and you have a fear of bee's but wont say your alergic to them?
I told him to his face that I was afraid of bees. I was making excuses, like I said, at the start of the job because it was not at all what I expected. Then you guys talked sense into me that I needed to finish the job because it's the right thing to do. After that, I didn't make excuses to him once.
why are you "proveing to him that you're a good worker" when you want to quit
Because you guys talked sense into me that I needed to finish the job and build a reputation.
i agree with the previous post.. you're trying to find an excuse to get out of working there. far as i'm concerned you have two options. tough it out and finish the job or go and tell the guy you're worth more money. if you have to go for another job i'd rather tell them i left the old job cuz of money than cuz i was afraid of bees.
I decided to take the first option and tought it out. I'll finish the job, even if it never ends. I'm the only help he has right now because his other worker quit.
wanting more money is normal. somebody that doesn't understand that isn't worth working for.
I shouldn't have agreed to $5/hour. That was my mistake, and it won't happen again.
If you dont want to work there because of the wasps, just tell him that. Be honest. That way, you always have the moral highground.
That's exactly the route I took Thursday night when I went back for a couple hours. He told me he had plenty of other work for me to do, which I accepted because I want him to know that I'm a good worker and not a quitter.
Get your cash up front - don't get stuck for it later.
The guy sounds like a losing game...
He pays me after I finish for the morning/evening. He does, however, round up with pay, so I know he's not trying to jip me. He just wants someone to work for cheap. I do get my money before I leave.

At this rate, you will be working for this man for the next forty years.
No matter how you look at it, when you go back to work for him after the 'agreed upon' first detail, you are asking to be exploited.
It is one thing to not be a quitter, but, it is another thing to be that man's 'whipping boy.'
I would do the work that I agreed to do for the wages that we agreed on.
And then tell him I need more monye when he offers more work.
If he won't raise your wages tell him you can earn more elsewere.
If you do him a good job he should give you a good refrence even if you quit for more money.
If he don't. he don't deserve your respect.
My 2cts worth.
i got stung by a wasp today. it wasn't so bad. but my finger puffed up a little. it's wierd i always get stung on the fingers. that's 3 times now this year not counting all the mosquitos.
F1509, I didn't catch your age, I am presuming that you are young. Let me tell you something that has always helped me. A big ole Indian that I worked with used to tell us when we would start complaining " Big cat if this **** was easy, everybody would be doing it, and we would be out of a job". At the end of the day, weather or not you decide at some time in your life, that you wish to persue a different career, all you have is your word/reputation. You may land the biggest or best contract/ job in the world because of a simple test. One never knows when he is being tested, by whom, or for what reason.
A man of his word has nothing in life to worry about.
