towing limits on new trucks

this is more of a rant than a question, but it's something that's bothers me.

I own a 34' 5th wheel toybox. dry weight is 8500 lbs, and fully loaded its runs in at 15,000 lbs with my 4x4 jeep in the back.

why is it, that even a NEW F350 has only a max tow rating of like 16K? My trailer is far lighter than most. and I don't think that 15k is that extra ordinary tow wieghts now a days. My dad has got a 39' 5th wheel that weights 18K DRY!!! and it wasn't special ordered or anything, just right off the lot. he's got a F450, but he also has a business he can use it at too.

what kills me the most is I want to buy a new truck, but it seems that right off the bat, I'm gonna be at its max limit, so I could never got to a bigger trailer if I wanted to.

thanks

sb

You could get an F450 with a pickup bed. It is aftermarket but it still works. And get it with the highway gears.

About the same cost as an F350 mabey a grand or two more but it's way more truck.

we were/are looking at them. problem is, the come in any color you want, as long as it's white

but, the insurance and reg. fees are outragious for them too.

I just have a hard time getting around the fact that with what trailer weigh now a days, the limits of a new truck that the average joe can buy are severly limited to be able to stay in the limits.

Yea the color, most of them are fleet trucks so they are white to make it easier to paint. You could order one.

I didn't know the tags went up that much between a 350 and a 450

This seems to be a state to state issue. I would call your DMV and your insurance agent to clarify. In North Carolina the F350 drw requires a commercial plate with a specified weight. My resistration is $291 per year for 24,000 lbs GCWR. Insurance is based on stated usage, commercial vs private. Although I have never asked I suspect the 450 yould be the same. Ask, it may not be as bad as you think.

We only pay 54.50 a year for trucks up to 26k then it doubles up to 52k.

I just bought a 2006 4x4 CC F350 6.0 auto transmission with a 4.30LS rear end and its max fith wheel tow rating is 18,100 lbs. and a GCWR 26,000. This must be a recent change because we just bought a company truck 2005 F450 to get the same rating you can now get in a 2006 F350. In 2005 you could not get the 4.30 rear end in a F350. Also the 350 rides much more smother than the 450.

The 4.30 rear end was available on the F350 during the last part of the 05 year model and as part of the "Tow Boss" package. It was an available option which I passed up on my 05 F350 DRW.
