iam going to install an ign system in my friends f 250 with a 360, he is tired of points. my question is if you had your choice would you use a duraspark or the pertronix conversion. i have never used the conversion so the only thing i know about it is what i have read. the cost is of no concern as i have a complete duraspark system i will give him or he can afford the pertronix if we decide to go that route.
Stick with the Duraspark system. It has a spark retard function for easier starts. Mount a Motorcraft blue grommet module with 1/4" spacers to allow air flow to the bottom. You can get the Duraspark system modules tested at good parts stores and replacements are easy to get IF it ever fails. The aftermarket modules make a good spare to throw under the seat but they seem to die easily from heat.
Thanks for using FTE!

I'd go for the pertronix. I've been quite impressed with its performance on my '74 360. Of course it has been in the truck for only about a year, so I wouldn't expect any problems with it. I'm not too sure why one would need to carry the extra pertronix module. If you really are afraid of it failing all you need to do is carry an extra point/condenser set. That can be reinstalled in a pinch.
I get the impression from this and the FE engine forum that the pertronix is more reliable than the duraspark.
The basic MSD-6A and a basic MSD billet dizzy are a cut above the Durafart(IMHO) but cost abit more....the 6a will doublefire up to 3000 rpm which helps with starts , etc........fd
yea the msd is a great system, its what i have in my 428. i think it is a little rich for my friends blood. especially on his tired ol 360. the msd is worth more than his entire engine!
I agree with the MSD guy. But you can cut down the costs by using the Duraspark distributor with the 6a. The Ford distributor itself is solid-I've never had a pickup in a Duraspark go bad (they can of course). However, I'm all for the billet MSD unit if you can afford it.
Hey man go with a DUI (Davis Unified Ignition). You wont be sorry i got one on my truck i had a pertronics then msd and now dui and its the best Forget wires everywere and tracing ##### down when it goes out. If u got 12v going to it replace the module which you can get anywere for a chevy and your back in business. Plus the calibrate it all for your setup. Thats just my opinion tho.
like 300bucks but well worth it. Go to a seach sight like lycos.com and type in davis unified ignition and you'll find it. I was skeptical at first but it was well worth the money. Not a problem yet after about 2 years.
