Hey ya'll. I'm kinda new to trucks and haven't really worked on them much but i do know a little bit. My '93 f-150 300cu in 2x4 has an E4OD transmission and 122,000 miles on it. Recently my tranny has been making a low rumble/vibration noise in early 3rd/4th gear. It kinda feels like it isn't getting much power and if I had more gas it will downshift and get up to speed a lil faster. I have had about 300 lbs in the bed for the last couple weeks and am thinking that may have put too much strain on the tranny. Thanks in advance for any help.
Oh yeah, i had a bad connection on the negative terminal of my battery last night so i'm thinking that may have had something to do with it because it started driving funny right after i retightened the cable.
I'm not much of an Aout trans kinda guy. You'll have to do a little more research but I think your tranny is electronically controlled for shifting by the PCM, computer. I do know when you disconnect the battery, all learned correction factors are cleared and eveything goes back to stock untill hte corrections are relearned. And this is just a guess, that there might be correction factors for the tranny shift points. Some error condition might exist (vacuum modulator, slipping bands, torque converter...) that the PCM was accounting for. Now it has to relearn around that problem. It might take 100 miles. This is the only conncetion I can think of between the battery and the transmission. I might just be full of it - any automatic trans guys out there?
Oh yeah, the 300 isn't a V-8 but it's no slacker either. It will pull 300 pounds.
Oh yeah, i love my 300...which is why that was bothering me. I didn't think that a lil weight would bog that thing down. I was reading about KAM resets and that seems like a logical answer so i'm just going to drive it around so it can relearn it's stuff. Thanx for the help man.
Since I have a manual trans I never looked into how the auto's work with the PCM. I'm not sure if what I stated has any merit. However, if it does, then that means something is wrong with your transmission. It's not supposed to slip between gears - but then I'm not sure if that is what you were trying to explain as the problem. Of course changing the fluid and the filter is always good maintenance.
Another thing to check, if it seems to be an engine performance issue, is the computr memory codes. Even if you have not received a check engine light, there cod be codes stored that can point to a performance issue. Maybe if it was running right, there might be enough power that it won't have to downshift.
