Hey guys, what's up? I have a 2002 Ford Explorer and I have about 60,000 miles on it. I have no clue whether the issues i'm having has to do with age of the vehicle or what but i want to get them fixed. First problem, the Explorer is leaking oil, i'm not sure exactly from where but i think it's from the tranny. Second, alot of the times i turn off the car, i get this noise that sounds like it's comming from the motor, like a whinning noise or something. Then there is the third problem. Alot of times I try to close the window gate, it won't close. You have to try several times to close it. Oh and before i forget, the tranny acts weird sometimes. Whenever you step on it to like merge on to the freeway or something, the tranny jerks as if it slipped or something. Thanks in advance for the help guys.
Sorry, can't help you out. I have 66,000 miles on my 99 xlt and the only problem I have ever had was a water leak at the top of the windshield on drivers side, [of course]. But that's been resolved.
I have been told that the whining is the serpentine belt and it will go away if you install a new belt. My 02 whines too, but I haven't gotten around to changing the belt yet. With respect to the rear window, there was a recall on the dampers that operate the rear window. I had mine replaced. Maybe that's part of the problem, or maybe not.
My wife has a 2002 Explorer XLT and it has developed the dreaded timing chain tensioner noise. I just did an used oil analysis and the wear in the valvetrain area is elevated drastically. The shredding tensioner is messing up the valvetrain seriously . We are going to trade in the Explorer for the V-8 model. With the employee pricing and rebates it's too good to pass up. I'd love to buy a Toyota but too darn expensive. The 4.6L Ford engine is a real good proven engine. Other than the timing chain tensioner disintegrating and destroying the engine it's been a good vehicle. The repair involves putting the same defective part in again and charging a fortune to do so. Only to have it fail again . The repalcement of the tensioner could cost around $800 if it's the front one or over $2,000 if it's the rear one.
