It's personal preferance.. It's entirely up to you.. It won't hurt a thing to shut it off, and it won't hurt anything to leave it on... Desktop or Laptop.
At home - - -
My laptop. . I shut down after use. (Habit.)
Two pc(s) & and a Mac. . . I shut down.
Three desktop pc(s). . . I leave them on 24/7/365. Again, habit.
Two schools of thought -
1. The 'surge' of electricity through the parts on intial start-up COULD do harm to the electronics.
2. As long as the pc is running, you don't have to worry about the battery that keeps the information in the CMOS, going dead, and the pc not starting.
Work - -
I leave them on 24/7/365.
EDIT: It is really personal preference. I do, however, shut them down about every three months and vacuum out the dust that WILL get into the fans. Heat is NOT good for the components.

I shut mine down when storms come through but that's about it. Now with my Win 98 machine, I shut it down when I'm done with it.. which reminds me, I need to wipe that thing out. Anyways Win98 has a memory problem and doesn't like to release memory once the app that used it closed.
On edit: You should always have at least one firewall up.
Primary home and office desktops are on, 24/7. XP Auto updates are just that, but a reboot periodically will handle anti-virus updates. Other two home PC's get turned off when not in use...I hope. Oldest son likes to shut off firewalls- sez it slows his online gaming down.
Mine run most of the time. But, I occasionally reboot just because Windows seems to like that. I do believe shutting down daily will reduce the lifetime of some components (Hard drives, power supplies etc.) I know I've had PCs that ran fine for along time, then one day on a start-up something would die.
"Slows online gaming" Well, unless your firewall is set to allow online Multiplayer gaming, yes it will slow it down. Especially if you are on dialup. Others will not allow MP servers to loadup with some games unless you turn them off.
To play the RUNE Multiplayer, I had to set my firewall not to block the servers. Otherwise it is still on to block anything else.
I have always turned my computers off when done. During the day, I have to as it gets too warm otherwise (80s) even with the swampers/evaporative cooler on. At night, no problem. Now, my son leaves his on 24/7 but his little place is small enough and the swamper keeps it "icy" in there.
I shut mine down. It's a habit. But having said that, electronic components are rated by power on/off cycles. In other words, it is easier on them to just leave the power on.
Back to the queston about modems... What if your modem itself has a power switch? I know some folks that leave the computer on, but shut off the cable modem when they are done. Seems logical to me. Our computer also lets us know when updates are available, so we can download them and then restart the computer when we need to.
I have 10 computers in my house on my network that run 24/7 365 all of them but the 3 I mess with only get rebooted when needed, at a power outage they go to UPS and then shut down. I have a 8 Meg cable connection with a router and firewall that runs on a 1gig backbone, then a 24 port Cisco switch connects everything else.
