Trans. Trouble?

I recently bought an 84 F-250 supercab 2wd w/460 and auto tranny. Truck runs great and shifts normal usually, but when towing my travel trailer recently I noticed the transmission making a whining noise and it seems to be slipping in 3-4th gears( engine revs but no acceleration). Also I have to mash the pedal through the floorboard before it will kickdown. Fluid level is good and looks clean. I added some sea foam trans tune with no result. Any suggestions? BTW which tranny would be best to replace the stock one if need be?

Hmmm, I don't know your model year, but I don't think your year had a 4 speed auto so it sounds like maybe your lockup torque converter may be slipping, not sure if yours even has a lockup TC.

With your age, I wonder if the tranny has a lot of miles on it and it is time for a rebuild.

Good Luck,

My mistake, its a C6 3spd (slipping between 2-3rd). i got out the manual today and adjusted the bands as per instructions and it seemed to help. I also by-passed the radiator and routed straight to a stand alone trans cooler to see if it may have been heat related, Although this truck always runs hotter than average, but that's another problem.

I am not a tranny expert or even tinkerer, my fun is engines and general tinkering. I would suspect maybe the shift modulator, or even a vacuum leak? I think the modulators run off engine vacuum.

I don't know that this is the problem, just a vague recollection that this is sometimes the symptom of a bad modulator.

I have heard the C6 is a good strong tranny and since you probably have minimal computer controls for the tranny you can't move up too new because the newer trannys rely a lot on computers. I would probably look at rebuilding what you got or finding a drop in.

I am hoping someone with more experience steps in with some personal experience advice. At least my comment brought your topic back towards the top.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

What temperature does it run at since you say it runs hotter than average? Also, if the transmission fluid has been running too hot for too long, and the tranny has been damaged because of heat, it's a little too late for the stand alone coolers now

I hope it's just a simple fix. I would think that if it was vacuum related, then your 1-2 shift would be a problem as well, not just your 2-3, but it is worth a look. Also, pull the vacuum line off your modulator and see if fluid comes out. If fluid comes out, then it is shot and it needs replaced. What is your fluid level like? What color is it? Is there debri in it? Does it smell burned? Deffinately check those things.
