I have a 65 F-100 with the 4spd. The top cover on the tranny said T-98. Tha side of the tranny said T-18. The shift cover was worn out, wouldn't hit first or fourth so I had it rebuilt. Still not sure which tranny this is. Reverse is to the right and up. It has a replacement vin so I can't run it through a decoder. Thanks.
If nobody answers here, and someone will probably eventually be able to do so, try posting on the transmission site. Some of the tranny heads don't visit the older truck forums. Good luck!
I do not know for sure what transmission you have.
But I'd tend to believe what's on a case since some top covers interchange on/among a few different models of transmissions within a Manufactureres line, like Borg Warner, Clark & New Process.
I do know that top covers do not interchange betwen Mfgrs, say a Borg Warner on a New Process or a new process on a Clark, etc. etc. SO my guess would be you have a T-18 Borg Warner 4 gear. . . .
You have a t-18. 65 was a transition year for Borg Warner. Since the top cover casting is the same in a t-98 and a t-18, they used up the old castings before they switched to newer castings that had t-18 both places. The business with t-98 top cover may have persisted for several years.
Have fun -- I hope you didn't have to pay too much rebuild the t-18. If I were to ever shell mine out (hard to do), I will be swtiching to a close ratio t-19. Has a syncro'ed first gear, which is higher and more useable than the old 6.28 ratio granny in the t-18. But the t-18 is no bad tranny, not at all. Just no good for drag racing!!
