drivers window

My 1977 F 150 Drivers window does not crank up or down. I use a small wooden wedge to hold it in place. Not being very expeienced at window mechanisms, I am a little reluctant to dismanteling the door to fix it. Would there be any books that would show how to, as in :"Chiltons" etc? Any help is very appreciated!

A chiltons should show it. These are very simple to replace. I would search for a good used one if possible, but they are available aftermarket too.

Maybe go to a junkyard and pull apart a door with a good working regulator. Buy those parts, in case what you have is broken, and at the same time, you will see how it all works. They are not too difficult to work on. I have changed glass before (my 71 Torino Sport roof had a glass from a formal roof car, and it was the wrong cut... something the last owner did but did not know about the differences)
It gave me a chance to see what I needed for parts, and I had to look through several early 70's cars to find the right pieces. (nylon spacers and washers, a nut, and other tid bits that I can't recall)
With the door panel off, you should see what is going on when you try to crank.

Yes, it is called a regulator. It consist of a small gear, a large, 1/2 round gear and an arm or two on it that goes into the metal channel on the glass.
Maybe yours just came out of the track? Does it ever catch at all when lowering or raising? The one on my F100 slips in most positions, I just never drive it so I haven't fixed it yet. I did put one in my F150 years ago. My bad one will catch enough to hold the window up without it falling down.

I will pull the inner door panel off and have a look-see, hopefully it can be repaired without replacement, but I doubt that will be the case. I found a source for window regulators on the web, so if I do have to replace it, I can get a new aftermarket one, but I will check my local junk yards / recycle places also. Thanks for your help!
