Well we just had are third child and the PT Crusier has to go. Was looking at the Expedition, but the Excursions seems to be a better deal used. Have some questions on them, hope you can help. Also Plan to tow 8000 lbs with it.
1) 5.4 vs V10 I think the obvisous choice is the V10 does not seem to matter for the mpg.
2) 4x4 or 4x2. I know we live in New England but this thing seems to be heavy enough that a 2 wheel drive will work.
3) If I go with a 2 wheel drive can the rear wheels be made limited slip for wet boat ramps.
4) I know about the mpg I am not buying it for that. Wife works 5 miles from home. I drive 75 each day so it will be her's to drive.
I live in Connecticut and drive to Vermont during the winter months almost every weekend. I have been caught in 3 feet of snow and would definately not get anywhere without 4 wheel drive. I have driven on many New England highways during the winter and sometimes 4X4 is a must. The excursion with no trailer would not do so well in the snow/slush. Being rear wheel drive is already a disadvantage in the snow and slush, and with the power of the v10 or psd, you'd probably be all over the road in a 4X2 excursion in the winter. And even with it being a heavy truck, it still spins and slides all over the road in a snowstorm in 2wd. So you'd probably be better off with the 4X4 and you'd definately have a higher resale value when you're ready to sell it, especially in New England.
just my 2 cents and personal experience.
I have 2wd with the v-10 and I think it handles great in the snow and slush. I had my share of both 2wd and 4wd and this thing is a tank as far as I'm concerned. If you find an outstanding deal on a 2wd like I did go for it.
I have a 4x4 in cleveland and regularly travel thru Michigan, New York, and PA in the winter. I also lived in CO for the first year of ownership. The only time I use the 4x4 is in the mud! The truck has plenty of traction in the snow and ice in two wheel drive. The only time you would need the 4x4 in the snow is if its deep enough to drag the under side of the truck. I do admit, I like knowing that if things get really bad, I can always pull the trigger on the 4x4 and the truck is unstoppable.
I know they do- just have never actually seen one.
i live on THE OUTER BANKS NC (KITTY HAWK,NAGS HEAD) nothing but 4x4's beaches every car lot i went to including the one my buddy own and buy most my car and trucks from said the same thing 2wd? they make one! why do you want a 2wd? $5000 in rims (24") are never going near the beach and saltwater! plus dont think it would do that good anyway on those low profiles! had one guy tell me still get the 4wd you can still put rims on it. WHY WOULD I WANT THE ADDED WEIGHT ,MAINTENCE AND GAS GUZZELING! to each his own! it is all in what YOU NEED! NO ONE ELSE not to mention i picked up a 2000 limited in mint gondition 7 hours inland for $15,000 they wanted $23,00 for a 2000 4wd xlt with pretty much no options around here!
