After spending several weekends tinkering in the garage, my big project is finally coming together. Besides rebuilding the cab floor and installing a 3" body lift, I made a tilting front clip.
The most surprising thing about it is that it actually WORKS!

I still have to put the finishing touches on it, but the functionality is all there.
I could use some suggestions on latching devices. I'm thinking about the externally mounted ones like on a Jeep hood. But, if I could get a few internal ones like the stock hood latch, I think it'd look better.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Nov-02 AT 11:06 PM (EST)]Thats awesome lookin! I've thought about doing that so many times but never had the junk to start cutting, hey you should get some close ups of the joints and other key components you had to modify. You know, so I can copy you
I'd go withe the internal latch downs, I noticed thats how a pulling truck (79 Ford) had it done once, I even think he used Jeep clamps, I know the guy I'll stop by and check out how he did it for sure one day.
Just out of curiosity, how sturdy is it, does it sway back and fourth when it is up? or bend any?
You could use a couple of Mopar electric trunk latch. They are pricey if you find them on eBay but they are plentiful in the junkyard. I am using 4 of them on my tilt system.
Thanks for using FTE!

Good jod man. Looks great...hhmmm...maybe I need a tilt front clip now........lol
Internal latches would look alot nicer, basides if u use jeep type latches, the jeep boys would rag you about copying them
How sturdy is the rad without the factory support? And what about the battery? did u move it or does it leak when its tilted? Does the hood still open?
It's as sturdy as the hood is with it's original hinges. I think it bends even less because of being fastened to the fenders. I will take some pix of all the details and draw up the fabricated parts on CAD. All the steel I used only costed me $10 at the local scrap yard, including the stuff for the floor repair.
magnus,
The radiator is temporarily mounted to the frame w/ c-clamps and the fenders and hood are c-clamped together too. I wanted to make sure it would work before I reached the "point of no return". The batery and all the electronics that were mounted to the inner fenders have not been relocated yet.
At this point, the hood does not open the normal way. But that's just because I took out the inner fenders that the hinges mount to. I do plan to make it open though.
I have seen the '70-80's Cadillac electric trunk latches used on streetrods. It seems to be a good setup. I think it is basically the same rig as you see in magazines.
So how do you plan on supporting the radiator, condensor etc?
A tilt would be real nice on my project because I need the room where the hood latch support is now for the intercooler.
>So how do you plan on supporting the radiator, condensor
>etc?
I'm gonna run an angle between the frame rails and bolt it to the frame and radiator. The top will be supported with rods going back to the fire wall like in the old hot rods.
The c-4 (84-96) Corvettes use dual latches located at the back of the hood and activated by just one inside pull. You could just go to a scrap yard and pull a couple of any old yanker that used an inside release. Bracket this in at the rear inner support that you have left on. A couple pieces of sheet metal to hide the workings and two cables routed to the inside of the truck and it would factory installed.
I've seen a few tilt front fords
1) use the semi straps on the side(ugly)
2) get any hood latch froma donor car and cut the other piece off the hood and weld it to yours (will look great)also look at the hoad on a 78 79 bronco borrow that piece at the back and at it to yours you will see what i mean when you popp the hood on a bronco keeps the hoad fro vibreating so bad
3) radiator set is easy get some angle Iron weld two upright to bolt it to make sure to reinforce these brackets mount the battery and all eltronics to the firewall legthen the headlights wires
