1.The check engine light will come on for a few seconds and at the same time the oil level gauge will go all the way down. Anone know why. I find the little check engine light to be the most annoying thing on the truck. God I hate it.
2. The AOD/DOT transmision in the truck will get to third gear and wont shift up again. I dont know if its because it only has 3 gears or because it has 33's with the stock gears in the diff's. Im cruising at 60 miles an hour doing 3,000 rpm.
3. Engine death(5.0L/302ci). It will die if I sit at idle for too long. It died once when I was halfway through a turn, but anytime it does I can put it in park and start it again. My theory for this is because the people I bought it from always used premium gas and Im using regular, and the engine is just tuned to run on premium. Anyway Im gonna do a tune up tomorrow and see if that fixes the engine and tranny issues.
the check engine light is very usefull if you know how to work it.
your problem seems to be with oil pressure which is not good. pull the codes, or have Autozone pull them. the pcm will store trouble codes when your check engine light comes on, when i goes out, it usually means the problem has temporarily fixed itself...or gone away for the time being. as for the aod..i couldnt help, i dont know much about them.
but get the codes, and post your finds, someone will help you, these guys are great on this page
Ya I got a lot of help in a previous thread. I went to advanced auto parts and asked them to run an engine diagnostic but they said they couldnt because it was too old.
Ok, your problem sounds simalar to the one I had 6 months ago. Last week, I had to pull the engine. After opening up the block, I found a piston with a huge chunk out of it (pics to come soon). I talked to a repair guy who said he had seen this often in Windsor engines, and something to do with bad oil flow. My recommendation, get it fixed before you blow your block. But then again, I've been rather bitter lately.
You can pull the codes yourself with nothing more complex than a paperclip (since you already have a check engine light you wont need a meter or test light).

How do I know if its a windsor block? How the hell did the piston lose a chunk? I also want to know what HP and torque numbers I should be getting out of the motor(302ci, K&N intake system, dual exhaust)
What does your column read? P R N 1 2 D, or P R N 1 D OD. Or do you have to put it in O/D electronicaly by pushing a button? If it is the first set then you have a c-6, second is an AOD and third is a E4OD. If it is the c-6 then you only have 3 gears. If it is the E4OD, good luck. The AOD is not that complicated of a tranny. Usually when you go to put it in O/D and the band is toast it will just go into neutral and your rpm's will skyrocket. I would first check your T.V. cable adjustment. Many people dread touching it because a mistake can fry the tranny. If you adjust just like the haynes manual tells you to then you will be just fine and it is very simple to do. If that does not work then check your linkage, it might be bent or out of adjustment and not allowing the tranny to go into O/D. If that fails, then it is internal, such as the O/D servo piston getting stuck. If that is the problem then it is time for a rebuild. As I stated before, usually if the O/D band is burned out it will go into a neutral.
