I was trying to pull a car out of dirt on the side of the road. I was on gravel with a 1" rope. I was pulling it out in 4L Reverse. Half way out it hear a snap in my front end and this is what I found http://img12.imageshack.us/my.php?image=disney01888gq.jpg
My truck is a 2004 SD 6.0 Fx4 CC with 9000 miles. I have a 4" rough country lift with stock tires. No mods other than lift. Am I screwed?
well i would definitley be going to the dealership and giving them a piece of my mind. honestly i dont think you will have any problem with them over this, it should be covered under warranty i would think.
Not screwed, but it won't be cheap either. You'll need new inner & outer axle shafts.
I've pulled in reverse in similiar situations & never broke one. Had the tires spinning on pavement too. I think if the wheels were possibly turned or if the tires started jumping, then it would be a more likely break. Good Luck!

I've also seen this many times on the trail. It usually occurs when the engine is right at the peak of the torque curve and a wheel gets suddenly stopped, caught on a rock, or whatever. But normaly it only occurs when the vehicle has a front locker. But 560 lb.-ft of torque has to go somewhere. If it's not turning a wheel, something is going to give. I don't know if this would be covered under warranty. Luckily (I know it probably doesn't feel like it,) of all the things that could have blown apart, transmission, transfer case, etc. This is one of the least expensive.
