Question want more power!

New member here. I have a '97 RangerXLT with a four cylinder w/auto trans. Does anyone know the best or possible options for a 6 or even 8 cylinder swap? Transmission replacement with a 4 or 5 speed manual or another auto?

You could find a wrecked similar year or later Explorer with the 5.0L, and swap over everything. It should be close to a bolt in.

Hi Jesse,
Do you have any info about how to go about doing that such as websites, books, etc.?

Hi Rusty,
are the Ranger and Explorer built on similar/same frames? Sorry if thats a dumb question but I don't know! Thanks.

As a follow up question: Another thing I don't know is how the Liter measurements compare to the old C.I. For instance what ci would a 5L engine be? I had a Taurus sedan for a while with a 3L V6 that had plenty of power and got pretty decent mileage (until my wife ripped its front end off in a wreck!). What would that compare to?

To convert liters to cubic inches, just multiply the litres times 61.02

It isn't exact, but really close: 7.5 litre is 460, 7 litre is 427, 6 litre is 366, 5 litre is a 302, 4 litre is 242, 3 litre is 181, and so on.

I'm pretty sure the Ranger and Explorer are built on very similar frames, if not identical. The older stuff I'm fairly sure about, but not so much the newer stuff. Take some measurements before you get in too far to make sure.
