I'm a pretty good mechanic, so I didn't think I'd need to bother anyone here about this.....but I'm stuck. My engine viabrates! It happens from idle all the way up, in gear on the road, or out of gear sitting still in the driveway. It has done this since I bought it a few months ago. It's definately confined to the engine alone. I was determined to find this, and just removed a stuck socket on the damper bolt, hoping that was it (I posted that elsewhere here), but no luck. It's not real strong but it's quite irritating, and increases just a bit (yes, just a bit) with engine speed, in or out of gear. It's not a miss! All plugs fire in the proper order with no apparent crossfire, and compression is good (did compression and leakdown) in all cylinders. The engine runs strong and always starts immediately. The carb is adjusted well (a friend with an analizer took a reading and said the mix is fine). Timing is set at 8 degrees btdc. Plugs show good color and all mounts are solid. The truck has a 3 speed and clutch.
Frankly, it feels like the kind of viabration you'd get when the engine is off balance. Maybe the damper outer section has slipped. In fact, it may not really be timed at 8 degrees because of a possibly slipped damper, but it behaves best when set on that mark. I've never been confronted with a problem like this before and am at a loss. Any ideas??
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Jan-03 AT 09:25 PM (EST)]What motor does your truck have. There is a chance that it could have the wrong flywheel on it. This happens pretty often when people swap 302's into a truck that had a 300 six because the flywheels for these motors are balanced differently.
