94 tubrodiesel (non-powerstroke), Automatic with 410 gears, turning around 2000 rpm at 60 mph. How high is too high on the temp gauge. I am pulling a 7000 lb enclosed trailer and it is near 100 degrees outside air. Truck runs high m low a while driving to the track. Pyro meter is staying between 10 and 11. Has anyone check a manual gauge to verify what temp is at what letter? Thanks for your help. Chris
Chris - if you are maintaining the pyro at 1100, that might be the problem. you have to give the engines a rest sometimes. Try backing out of it for a while and see if that allows the temp to drop. You may be overfueling it. Also, if the fan clutch has mileage on it, you might need a new one, just dont let the temp go way up. hope this helps you out.
Install a manual temp guage in place of the stock. They do not call them idiot guages for nothing. I can give you the theoretical temps vs ohms but they are only rough.
Did not get to finish, 1100 for a long time is not good, that will add to the increase in temp. Remember 1240 is the melting point of the pistons. Have you checked out the cooling system, fan etc. What trans temp are you running ?
I would like to advise all the members to clean the A/C condensor fins and the radiator fins with compressed air then water. If you do/did off roading check for mud buildup it can be hard like baked clay.
We have seen many in the past weeks plugged to the hilt, in fact one had enough straw and field crud plus mud to fill a 5 gallon pail. The clutch fan worked fine but no air was passing to it, consequently no cooling.
Thanks for all the advice. Looks like I have found one problem. Noticed the temp gauge was going very low when not under load. Changed the thermostat and found it was stuck open and the rubber gasket was gone. Don't know what the rubber gasket does but alldata was very insistant it was there. Next trip it never got to the A and would cool down much faster after a hill.
Would still like to get better cooling. Has anyone tried to use the aluminum radiator that you can order for the 460 truck?
Hi Chis - I was talking with an IDI owner last night who was concerned about slightly higher than normal temps on his truck and he had a modified impellor fitted to his water pump. Temperatures regularly reach 50 degrees celsius where he lives and has never had an issue since(he is located in Western Australia).
Regards
Darren
Hello Darren, Thanks for the info. Do you have any details about the modified impeller? I need to do something and was going to change the water pump this winter anyways. Thanks again Chris
