Oil Leak Fixed
in the front of the transmission bell housing. I suspected the rear
main seal was the culpret. Noticed more oil that usuall this weekend
and crawled under to find everything from the oil pan to the trailer
hitch coated in oil. The large rust blisters on the oil pan are oozing oil.
So now I believe I need a new pan and rear main. A little more inspection
and I see the pan gasket is blown out in several spots. Just how I planned
my 4th of july weekend.
I grab a scraper and start scraping the rust blisters off then spray it
down with carb cleaner. To my suprise the rust stays dry and there
doesnt seem to be any holes in the pan. Off to autozone, the computer
says only one brand/style gasket in stock lets see if its really on the shelf.
Is it in? is it rubber or cork? Yeah.. a rubber felpro gasket with metal gromets.
Back home drain oil, drop pan, clean surfaces, wiggle gasket around pan
use the plastic studs in gasket kit to line up and hold gasket and pan in place.
reinstall bolts, degrease area around pan to make it easier to look for leaks,
replace oil and filter.
Next grab the dremmel and 80 grit flap wheel. clean loose rust off pan
one coat rust stopper, one coat grey primer, one coat grey paint.
Clean up tools while paint drys, off to gas station fill up get the deleux
wash with underbody wash to clean oil off rest of truck. test drive for
a little while and find a clean spot on the street to park.
Two days later no leaks. If fact it appears that the rear main was
not leaking. The gasket leak must have been running down the inside of
the bell housing access cover and out the weep hole.
I didn't even smash and fingers or bust my knuckles Yeah, its about time
things go smoothly.

Yes it's a 4.9/300/I6. I dont have a garage so I did it in the driveway.
The truck sits high as it is but a couple jack stands in the front gave me
plenty of room to get under and work, a large blanket on the ground to save
my skin and it wasn't too bad.
