Cool Un-burnt Fuel

My 93' F-150, 5.0 is running way too rich, enough that the fuel cloud is vissable at an idle and under any acceleration.

Went to AutoZone and the codes were 41, 43, and 35.

we acncled out two of the codes but the one that seemed to be the problem was the EGR Valve pressure censor.

Replaced that, fixed the idle problem, sort of (Still idles a bit rough and still has vissable cloud of un-burnt fuel, enough to water my eyes and loose my breath)

Could the O2 sensor be bad as well, just replaced it a little over a year ago; it had a crack around the housing and I'm wondering if that caused it to foul out, if that's possible.

any help would be great.

maybe fuel pressure regulator? Did you check the pressure at the rail? Maybe its pushing too much fuel into the cylinders. I am running rich too.

Would the FPR leak if it were indeed pushing too much fuel into the cyliders??

Another thing I didn't mention is that under acceleration it'll pop an crackle like it has a miss or something but the plugs/wires/rotor/cap are all new.

My guess would aslo be fuel pressure regulator. Mine was running rich too, and that seemed to fix it. Although, even after I put the new one on, it hisses when I turn it off, advirtising a leak somewhere... Anyone know how to fix that sucker, or where the leak usually is?

Here are 2 easy, free ways to check the FPR:
-Remove the Vacuum Line of it...if there is fuel present, Replace it.
-Goto AutoZone or advance auto and borrow the Fuel Pressure Gauge. Hook it up at the fuel rail and pressure should not be over 40PSI at idle (40PSI is WOT). If its over 40PSI, replace it.

Run a code test with the engine on and post back results.

How is he going to test that? At WOT he could be having problems with the throttle position sensor, and many other sensors. It should be done at idle. Safest way too cause you won't hit the rev limiter.

There's a rev-limiter on these trucks, I've never found it, seems to start floating before anything(wasn't trying, Local drags and missed third).

There's no fuel out the vaccume line, checked that a couple of weeks ago. but from the sounds of things that is where the problem lies. I'm thinkin its got too much fuel into it.

Had to change the oil after only 500 miles because it smelled of fuel will have to do it again after I fix the problem. and now the power steering box is leaking like a siv. This thing'll be brand new after I'm done fixing things. Its time to go back to the old stuff.

I just had a problem with my '91. It failed emissions with a high HC and high CO. It was running way too rich. I pulled codes, and the only one in memory was 41, which says the O2 sensor constantly reads lean. If the O2 sensor always is lean, it will be triggering the computer to pump more fuel into the system, hence running way rich. I changed my O2 sensor and it passed emissions with flying colors.

Maybe your problem, maybe not....

^ I'll try the FPR first, $25.00 over $55.00 cheaper part first. with 150,XXX+ I'm not too sure about EFI so I'm getting a carbed pre-80s vehicle.

also the book said that the code 41 was up to 92'.

EFI is easy to learn. The computer does most of the work you just need to understand what the codes mean/causes them. And always try to test first before spending money on parts.

Your 41 could be caused by several things but since you're running super-rich I would defintely test the fuel pressure first (free at AZ as mentioned already) and if that isn't the culprit I would go for the o2 sensor next.
Keep us posted on what you find,
Popa Tim

CEL came on again today as i was getting the mail, whatever it was caused the truck to stall. Would the FPR cause the CEL or am I looking at an O2 problem??

FPR will not cause a CEL...the O2 will.

If you get code 41 in CM and KOER, the O2 is 'stuck' on LEAN and is the problem.

Is this crack still in the exhaust system?

The codes were pulled while engine was off.

No, the crack was fixed when i replaced my clutch, crack was all the way around the housing. Again, would this cause the O2 to read wrong?

Yeah because it would let "fresh" oxygen in around the bung. Also remember the engine reads its settings before the burn and then after(O2 sensor). Fuel pressure can have some to do with it, but remember you still have injectors to cut fuel off and on. Is there a small clicking sound that is occuring while the truck is running? A stuck injector can let fuel continue to flow. I had a cylinder running rich and replaced the injector and I was fine. Either way your O2 can't be working right if you are running that rich and it isn't trying to cut itself back on fuel.

Try to pull the codes when the truck is running...they'll point you to the problem.
