Suggestions for RV re-build

Lost my engine in my 1987 RV. Cracked head & block. looking to do a re-build.
  • 18,500 lbs. weight / Sometimes tow a S-10
  • Need low compression for 87 fuel
  • Have performer intake and Banks Headers
  • What heads?
  • what year block / no smog requirements for big trucks in PA
  • Should I match the heads to the intake. (open to gasket size?)
  • Should I match exhaust to headers. (open to gasket size?)
  • What cam and grind should i use (Any RV grind?)
Any input is appreciated, need hi torque, low test.

John

You should be able to go at least 9.0:1 even with 87. Personally, I would get rid of the Performer and get a small Stealth intake. Then I would use some D0VE heads with at least 1.75 exhaust valves and a good exhaust port job. Then get a cam no bigger than around 220/225 with about .525 or so of lift. I prefer Comp cams, but everyone has an opinion about cams. Set it up with the intake centerline at 106 degrees. With blocks there isn't much difference other than a small change in deck height with the early blocks. Just make sure you know what it is, so you can adjust accordingly for your CR. I don't think port matching is required with a set up like you want. A good intake with good heads and headers should breathe well enough. Port matching might give you another 10 ft. lbs. of torque. To me it isn't worth it.

If you want to get really crazy with the torque, get a 514 kit. Very streetable and the cost really isn't that much more than a standard rebuild.

Almost forgot, you'll need to get the heads CC'd to make sure how big the combustion chambers actually are. This can vary A LOT depending on valve thickness, seat height, etc. You might even want to polish the cc's just to keep the chance of a hot spot leading to pre-ignition to a minimum. It is also going to be very important for you to include everything in your calculations for CR. You don't want to be much, if any, over 9.0:1, if you want to run the cheap stuff (87 octane).
