223 generator

Hello. I have the generator out of my project truck (1960 F100, 223 I6), because it's not generating any current. I'm hoping the brushes are just hung up. But anyway ... I can't get the dang thing apart. I took all the bolts out of the plate on the back, and it still won't come off. It rotates just a little bit ... like I can shake it back and forth about 5 degrees. It feels like it's still attached by something, though. Can anyone help me get this thing apart?

yep, they hang up on the bearing sometimes or your comutator is worn deep and the brushes can't get past the lip....just keep working it back and forth and it will come apart

I agree with Jim. They do get hung up sometimes, but resist any temptation to wail away on the casing, pulley, or fan with a hammer or big prybar. If you go that route, you'll have a harder time putting it back together than you did taking it apart.

You should be able to get at the springs through the slots at the back of the casing. Put a wire tie or just a wire around the springs, pull them back, and tie them off to release the tension.

Another trick is to get two pieces of steel rod the same diameter as the two bolts that hold the case together. Clamp the generator case in a big vise and run the rods through the bolt holes but make sure they are at just enough of an angle that they are not sitting on the threaded hole at the other end. A few sharp raps with a hammer, alternating between the two rods, and you should have it apart. Make sure you have something like a box of rags to catch the front plate and armature when it lets go. Good luck.

You can also make 2 hooks out of a wire coat hanger and go thru the slots and pull the springs back. Best to use 2 people one to pull the springs and one to pull it apart.
