Question Torqueshift Problem....

My cousin has an 05 F250 with a PSD and torqueshift. She loves it. It tows 2 horses in an old heavy trailer with ease. Now for the problem. Over the weekend she was driving in town unloaded and the engine rev'ed up like she was in neutral, and the tow/haul light started flashing. It won't go anywhere. She called the local Ford dealer and they are sending a truck to get it today. Just under 4000 miles on it. I searched and can't find anything like this on the site, but I'm sure someone here knows more about it than I do. I'm also interested because I have the torqueshift in my 05 too. I will follow up with any info the dealer gives her.

Thanks guys

Brian

I will pass on the information as I get it. The dealer picked it up yesterday, but said they wouldn't have a chance to look at it before Thursday.

Just got off the phone with my Cousin. The Dealer actually looked at the truck yesterday. "We can't recreate the problem." was on her answering machine last night. I did get more information from her though. She says the truck has done this about five times before. Cruising along at surface street speeds, say 20-25 mph the truck suddenly sounds like it's in neutral and the engine races. The previous times it "Caught" and kept going. This time the "Tow/Haul" light started flashing and it didn't "Catch". She parked it and called the dealer. I will update after she calls the dealer back this morning.

Sounds like she needs to find a new service shop. Even if they can't recreate the problem, there should be a code stored.

You might also want to have your cousin register a complaint with the NHTSA. Having the truck "slip into neutral" while going down the road can be a VERY dangerous thing. Just imagine that happening as you pull out onto a busy highway.

When PCM detects
a certain % of slippage in the transmission it generates a falut code.
The flashing "o/d" light is the powertrain computer's equlivent of a check engine light.
Any competant transmission shop should be able to pull the codes and
diagnose the problem. The PCM will increase the line pressure to help
compensate for the slipage so it may appear to come & go.

In my case I had a second gear int sprag fail at 46K miles. This is
mentioned in TSB 01-13-5. At the same time I was told the T/Q
in the 250 is know to fail and a lot of shops ugrade it with the unit
from the F350. It's also significant that the 100K "powertrain" warrentee
does NOT cover the transmission, but I'm going to bitch to Ford anyway
and try and get some "support" from them since they have published a
TSB that basically says the "new" int sprag (they call it a diode) is bad
replace it with the "older design".

The torque converters in the F250/F350/F450/F550 are identical.

It's also significant that the 100K "powertrain" warrentee
does NOT cover the transmission
That's because the powertrain warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles. The ENGINE warranty is 5 years/100,000 miles.

News from my cousin. She basically got jerked around at the dealer. The dealership is in the middle of being sold, and has lost some people, not that the treatment she got should be excused. She finally talked to the salesman that sold her the truck, and he was the first guy that actually asked her what the problem was and let her explain it. The next day she got a call saying that it was repaired and that they had replaced a solonoid. I told her to send me a copy of the repair sheet when she gets it so I could update this thread. Hopefully I can give more details after that. I told her to drive the hell out of it when she gets it back to make sure it is actually fixed.

The line on her copy of the repair sheet says.

Replaced SSC Solenoid, installed in line filter, added fluid.

It hasn't done anything wierd since she got it back. I'm no transmission guru, do these repairs make sense for what I described earlier in this thread?

That repair makes sense to me. A batch of torque converter solenoids with loose windings made their way into transmissions--this defect causes the torque converter to perform erratically.
