best intake...

Who makes the best intake for the 2004 PSD? I have read through many pages of information and it is hard to discren who make4s a good product.

I have swapped my muffler for some straight pipe and would like to free up the intake a little. Will adding an aftermarket kit do anything for me? I know it will not be substantial but I would think it would help some.

The only thing I do know is that some kits suck because they actually draw hot air which would be bad news since I go to the desert a fewq times a year.

So... what intake is good and why?

STOCK!! Especially if you are going to the desert. The Donaldson intake is the best one made for these trucks. They were developed for the military to use during the first gulf war and are still in use. Aftermarket intakes will only get you "some" gain in high RPM's which most of us are never in. Also Ford is pretty particular on warranty issues and intakes.

There was once a link to an independant test report posted and what it showed was that the after market filters had a higher silicone content in the oil analysis. This is an indication of more dirt/sand getting through to the motor.

The performance gains reported for other most other intakes are fairly minimal except at higher RPMs and even then not all that much.

If you're not racing and trying wring the very utmost power out of the truck, I'd stay with stock.

On my gassers I always stopped at the parts store on the way home from the dealerships to buy a K & N filter.

However, with the 6.0 I have seen no real world evidence to convince me to move away from the stock air filter.

IMO, stock is generally the way to stay for this 6.0 component.

After seeing the Donaldson next to a high-flow, I wouldn't run one in my truck. If you research the flow rates of the two different filters, the change is pretty negligible. For me this motor is too expensive to run compromised filtration.

I have run K+Ns in other trucks and cars and also got into the habit of cleaning the MAF meters every couple of months. It is unbelievable how much dust gets through those things.
