Transfer Case,
I was wondering if any of you have had any transfer case problems and ended up replacing one, and if so where you got it. I have a buddy with an 1994 F-250, 4X4, with a 1356 borg-warner? i think its the 1356 anyway, its got a rear slip yoke,
Well his got run outa oil, now its junk, and I was wondering if anyone knew where to get one,
Autozone sells them, but they want 1,000 for one without a pto, or 600 for one with a pto, not sure what the difrence is, my buddys dosent have a pto, but for 400 diff. i wonder if i could make it work.
Another place ive heard of is CAMEROTA, its a heavy truck drivetrain shop,
And last resort the junkyard, but not to big on them.
Thanks guys.
If it were me, I'd get it from the junkyard. It's a fairly easy grab and if you pop the drain on it and see good fluid coming out (should be 2 qts or more), and don't see looseness on the chain...you should be set for many miles.
The TC on my 95 was in worse condition then the one on my 89. It clanked in low range from a stretched chain. So when I swaped the transmissions between the two trucks (ZF/M5OD) I just kept the transfer case on it as well and swapped those with it. The 89 has 142k on it, the 95 only 105k. The transfer cases don't really see much abuse unless mistreated. If there's good oil in it thats a good sign.
What you can do is get one from the junkie that looks in good shape, use that for however long and when needed, rebuild it. It'll see years of use before it needs rebuilding as long as you look it over and make sure its good.
I wasn't a big junkie fan either but I've found as long as your smart about it you'll be good.
If he wants to drop the coin on a rebuilt one now...I wouldn't go through Autozone. Honestly, check fordpartsonline.com....i saw they had some engines listed, they might have a transfer case for a good price.
