Its not cool

I have a 93 F-250 with the 7.3L diesel (non-turbo). The A/C is not working and the vent blows partly warm air even at the coolest setting. The A/C clutch does not engage and there is no voltage present at the compressor connector when I turn the A/C on. When I jumper 12 volts to the compressor it engages but the system does not put out any cool air. Is this as simple as needing a charge? Is there a low pressure switch in the system which prevents the compressor from running with low/no freon in the system?

Great truck so far (got a great deal when I bought it about 3 months ago). Hope to install a Banks sidewinder in the next year or two.

Jeff

yes, there is a low pressure switch, and yes, you need a recharge. but before you recharge it, you should run a vacuume test on it to see if there is a leak so you do not waste the freon

if it's similar to my F-150's cooling system, it only took 1 pound of R-134a refrigerant to charge the thing. If you are buying stuff or paying for a vacuum test, waste 10 bucks on the one pound of refrigerant. might be cheaper.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will look into vacuum test/recharge. Jeff

Thanks Ryan. I like the idea of recharging to see if that works but its the old R-12 system. I've heard that stuff is pretty expensive. May be worth installing R-134 conversion.

If you can find it in your area there is a drop in replacement for R12 that allows you to top off your existing system with no modifications. One way you can check for leaks is to apply a soapy water solution to all of the fittings and connections. You may find a loose schrader valve. Don't worry about pulling a vacuum on the system unless you evacuate it to make repairs.
If you are unsure of your ability, check with a reputable repair shop.
