I own a bare bones 95 F250 2wd truck(5.8L/C6, no abs ) I'm having a brake problem. With the engine off the pedal pumps up hard but when it's running it drops just about to the floor before I've got any brakes.
I've replaced everything but the lines and the power booster. I'm almost positive the problem is the mastercylinder but I just installed a new Napa mastercylinder. I bench bled the master cylinder, I bled the brakes 3 times starting from the farthest and working my way to the closest. I've adjusted the rear brakes so there is just a slight drag when you spin the tire.
So am I nuts or does this sound like a bad mastercylinder? If it's a mastercylinder does anyone know where to get good quality parts??
I really appreciate any help you could give me. I need this truck to tow my car trailer.
Sounds more like a brake booster problem to me. Occasionally the rubber diaphragm inside the booster will develop a small hole, and when that happens, the pedal will almost feel like it's getting sucked down to the floor on its own.
The reason I don't think it's a master cylinder problem is the fact that when one starts to go bad, you can usually pump it up and get a solid pedal with a few pumps. Not always, but usually...and just because you get a new part doesn't mean it's any good. I've had to exchange a few "new" fuel pumps and master cylinders over the years.
Well I guess I'll go spend another $100 and get the booster and if it doesn't fix the problem I'll take back the mastercylinder and get another "new" one.
It's not the booster, I can guarantee that. A booster can never cause a soft or low pedal. It sounds like the master cylinder. Have you tried ordering the part from Ford?
Is the brake fluid level getting low? I had a booster pull brake fluid from the master cylinder until the level was low enough to effect braking. Could not find a leak but the fluid went into the booster. Had the booster and master cyl replaced to fix.
