351W buildup

Hi All,

Did some searching on this, but I have a few questions. I have 84 F150 with a tired 302, so I am building up a 351. The core I have is out of a 79-80 LTD. I have a set of D0O9-C heads for the build. I want to build up for mild/med performance, as this is my daily driver so I still need to get decent gas milage. The engine needs to be bored, and full rebuild. Could someone help me with the following questions:

1. What style of pistons should I use - stock '79 style, or what. I don't want to increase the comp. ratio too much so I have to use premium gas.

2. I have a 4V intake from a 69 351W. I've read there are differnce between the older and newer blocks. Will this intake work?

3. Are the exhaust manifolds the same between a 302 and 351W?

4. Any suggestions for cam specs? Like I said, I'm not looking for a tire burning drag truck here, just a daily driver with some good go.

1. You can use a 351 piston that is the correct overbore. I suggest a hypereutectic type piston, vs cast. You don't sound as though you need forged pistons.

2. The 351 blocks are pretty much all the same, there's a few different castings but they're generally the same. Maybe the difference you were thinking about was in the lifters? There are non roller and roller 351 blocks. You should be fine with that intake.

3. The manifolds are not the same. They bolt to the block in the same manner, but the shape and curves of the pipes coming down are not the same. Your concern wouldn't be if they fit on the motor, they will, but whether or not they fit between the other components surrounding the engine is the question. They may not tuck in between the framerails right. Also, the 351 is wider so the y-pipe part of the exhaust may be a concern as well. Either way, it's just exhaust routing and no biggy.

4. Call up comp cams when you figure out what you're going to go with for motor specs. Their tech people can recommend a good cam for ya after asking questions about your setup.

2. It's the intake that is different, the older 351w heads had L shaped water ports instead of rectangular water ports to accomodate 4 extra intake bolts. Edelbrock intakes come with a tab in the water port making it L shaped for older heads, or it can be cut out to make a rectangular port for newer heads. You will have to plug the extra bolt holes in the 69 intake or you will have some coolant leaks.

On edit: Can you verify those head casting numbers? They're not right.... If they are D0OE- heads, then you have the extra bolt holes in the heads too, which will work perfectly with the intake.

Second edit: I see you're from tobacco country. You'll have to drop into the Ontario forum and introduce yourself. Hi from Woodstock.
