Look at the stats as to the age group of drivers that is having the MOST driving accidents and violations, and I dont think one will find that it is the 55 + sector. I get in a lot more dangerous driving situations with young, inattentive and aggressive drivers , than I do the elderly. The largest threats I have seen from the elders is slow driving, and at that a attentive driver has time to make correction most of the time and creep over in the next lane and get around them. ..
It alls boils down to each driver is responsible for their actions, and those actions mean driving DEFENSIVELY, BEING ATTENTIVE and aware of the driving conditions around them at all times. On my drive to and from work everyday, I get the paint rubbed off of my front bumper from young drivers zipping in and out of lanes, while I am doing 65 in a 55 mph zone. jmo
All I can say is respect your elders. We all make mistakes. The road is for all of us to share. If your not willing to share the road then go build your own. We all make mistakes, but its the elderly that make the headlines. I believe they can make their own decision when its time to stop driving. Heck, If they made it to 70, I'd say they have made some pretty good decisions in their life.
Thats enough, I think I just gained 30yrs.

I never onced said i wasnt respecting my elders, for god sake i work part time at a senior center. Its not a matter of respecting elders 220k-f-150, it was just a discussion about there driving habits.I Never said other ages dont drive like idiots either. i could go on and on about other age groups as well and im sure i havent been the perfect driver,im sorry but i took offense to your post.
It makes me nervous because I are one... we had to get rid of my Dad's car when he got to be 83. I guess that's what I have to look forward to.
And that job of taking the elder's car away usually falls on the family. What makes it even worse is, that when one takes away thats person's privilege to drive , they are taking that persons last bit of independence away from them , and leaving them dependent on someone else for their needs. Not a fun positon for the elder or the family to be put in, I know, we had to do that to one of our own.......

People should be able to drive until they can't. However i think older poeple should be tested, for their safety and ours. When I am in a store and see to elderly poeple walk out at a snails pace because they can hardly walk it scares me to think they drive. I would bet some have some pretty slow reflexes. Drivers should be somewhat alert....

Hmm, took it personal. I guess since you started the thread, I can see how you took it personal. It was kind a simple one liners, wasn't it? As for respect, I believe respecting their decision to drive is where this came from. I'm not saying your disrespecting them. As for your wrong way driver on the exit ramp, I have had this happen to me twice in the last 5 years, and neither one was an elderly driver. So I can't blame it on them. As for the elderly driving habits, sometimes I think they drive too safe and overly cautious, but then again safe and cautious is how we are suppose to drive. Isn't it? Anyhow, my post wasn't meant to offend you or anyone else for that matter.
i think it should fall on the family insisting on the person to stop driving.
we had to do it to my dad 4 years ago after he miss judged and got into a major wreak that total his and the other car. and caused a 4 million dollar law suite. we forced him to have his eyes examined and found out he had cateracts and macular degeneration.
i had to personally write the state and ask they pull his ticket. it hurt sure but he's off the road.
as to age. i'm for haveing at least a eye retest to renew for all ages and letting a police officer and judge deside if the ticket issued was due to agresive driveing and let them pull the privlage.
i have to renew my coast guard captains license every 5 years and you would not believe the physical i have to take for that which includes a drug test.
Dad is 78 and drives twice as many miles annually as I do. He had to go in for a test at his last renewal and it took four tries until he passed. Motor skills and mental sharpness do deteriorate with age. The idea of denying facts for the sake of non-discrimination is foolish, but typical politics.
While I have an FAA pilot certificate for life, a medical examination and bi-annual ground and flight review with an instructor (at my expense) are required to keep flying.
Air transport pilots need a medical exam every six months and still are required to retire at 60. I am not suggesting this much trouble to keep driving, but at least something more than most states have now.
I see this as a no win situation. If we begin mandatory testing for the elderly, what happens if and when they fail? Who will be driving them around to get their groceries or other needs such as medicines? Not to mention the feeling of them losing their independence? A trait many of us Americans pride ourselves on.
On the other hand though, I have been involved in an accident involving an elderly driver before. The gentleman slowly crept through an intersection while his light was red, luckily I only clipped his front end and nobody was injured. I have also had a couple of near misses with elderly drivers as well, but I have also had several near misses with young civic punks as well.
I can see both sides of this issue. There are elderly people on the road today who are not only a danger to themselves but to others as well. Maybe though, these people are going out in their cars by necessity only to get food because they have nobody else to help them.
Everybody loses in this situation. No testing for the elderly and continue the presence of many dangerous drivers on the road, (I dont think all elderly drivers are dangerous.) Begin testing and watch many people lose their independence.
