Hey All,
I have a question regarding oil level and my 2000 F250 7.3 PSD not starting. Yesterday I drove the truck 40 miles out then 40 miles back, a few hours later my son tried to start it and it wouldn't fire. The engine cranked over like normal but nothing.
This morning I went out and checked the oil. It was just below the hash marks. I topped it off and the truck fired up. I wish I had tried to start it before putting the oil in.
So my question is, is there a low oil level sensor that could have kept the engine from running? I replaced the CPS at 90k (it has 138K now) so I hope it's not that problem again. I just don't want to be out somewhere and get stuck. The Haines Manual doesn't say anything out low oil sensors.
Thanks
Jim
How old are your batteries? If the voltage is down below (what is it?) 9 volts, the truck will crank ok all day long but the injectors just won't fire. The oil level was high enough for the truck to run, and AFAIK there is no low oil sender like the one you are thinking. If there was there would be an indicator light that would have been on.
I agree with Kwikkordead. The PCM won't allow the injectors to fire on a PSD if the batteries can't crank minimum of 300 rpm. It can crank all day at 299 and not start if the battery voltage is down ... I'm not sure of the number for the voltage to be low though.
Thanks for the replies guys,
The engine was really cranking like it normally does. I'm not sure of the RPM. If it happens again I'll make a note of it. I'm thinkning of getting one of the diagnostic readers. Do you know which or good but not too expensive. I'm not looking for any perfomance programmers just a code reader.
Thanks
again

OK heres an update. The truck starts after it's been sitting a while. Once it gets up to temp it stops running. No Check engine light, nothing. I got an Actron OBD II scanner and I get no codes from the computer.
This seems similar to when the CPS went. The Tach will jump up to 3 to 400 RPMs when it starts. When it doesn't I get no reading from the tach at all. Sounds to me like the CPS what do you guys think?
Thanks
Jim
I found a Napa open today that had a CPS and low and behold the truck runs great. This is the second CPS I've replaced. is this common? Doesn't give me the warm fuzzies when I think of reliability. The first two were Ford brand and this last one was a Napa brand.
I see a lot of these going bad when I read these forums. Anyone have experience with the aftermarket stuff? good or bad?
Jim
