Supporting back of engine?

This is a truck ('73 F-100) with 302 and C4. Removing and replacing the C4. The truck is raised off the ground about 6" (plenty of room for me but ...). I've done this before but my rear of engine support setup was always a bit rickety. There's no real crossover at the back of the engine in these trucks that you can jam wood between. What have you folks done? Thanks.

take a 4x4 lay it across from the radiator support to the upper part of the cowl then attach the engine with a chain. i used this method each time i had to pull my tranny.

This wont hurt the cowl at all ?

nope that cowl is pretty strong i used it 5 times to support my 428 .keep in mind you are not supporting the whole engine just the back so at most you have about 200 lbs of load with a 302. the enigne is still being supported by the motor mounts which takes most of the weight.

i just let it hang down, makes removal and install easier too.

You shouldn't need to support a 302 with anything. The way a 302 sits on it's mounts is balanced pretty good. I've removed transmissions from several 302s and the engine always just sits there.

If the mounts are strong enough to keep the engine from jumping out from under the hood then when it's running they'll hold the engine in place just sitting still. In other words you have to have good mounts to start with and not some worn out ones.

I dodn't support mine either. It moved very little when I lowered the tranny.

I just use a jack under the pan with a piece of wood across it so it doesn't crush. I have also done tranny pulls and installs with nothing under the engine, but still end up having to lift it some when the trans goes back in. I have a scissor jack from an import car for stuff like that. Good for minor adjustments.
