smelly rear window

I just bought my 2nd big bronco. While driving it home I rolled down the rear window to get some air flow. this thing has the same problem my old one had. You can't breath while driving w/it down. exaust comes right in the cab. does anyone have suggestions for the best place to exit the exaust to avoid this problem. I have thought of adding a high flow cat since there is not one there just to clean up the air a little. also neither of these had the exaust in the stock location. the 79 exited in front of the rear tires, (460) and this one exits right in front of the rear axle(300i6). any suggestions would be great.

I would personaly just have some pipes bent so they stick out the rear of the rear wheel so the air flow under the truck doesnt catch it in time to send it up your tailgate and in the window

that was my thinking. go out the sides as far back as possible. I was just wondering if this is a normal problem or did I just get stuck with two broncos with poorly designed exaust?

I just finish putting on my headers today and boy was that a fun pain in the a$$ I cracked a bolt in my passanger side cyliderhead tried drilling it and getting a screw exstractor in and such luck had cracked the screw exstactor flush with the hole I drilled for about 20 minutes couldnt get that out but anyway back to the point I was thinking of putting either lakeside pipes on it or have the exhaist come out before the rear wheel but I think I'm just going to put a catback dual exhaust system on it with the tips coming out after the wheel but was you exhaust rebuilt or was it the original exhaust setup?

I had mine straight out the back-Really bad -eye watering- then I tried right at the start of the rear bumper on a 45* angle- again eye watering- Back to the stock setup exiting aft the rear tire with a slight turn down. I remember way back when i first got this bronco The stock exhaust worked good no smells. I will be doing my exhaust work in the next couple of weeks I'll let you know. BTW- could always take top off that solve it for me no smell at all.-Bob

I have mine exit in the stock location - just in front of the right rear tire. If want to drive with the back window down, I just crack open the vent windows or roll down the windows a bit. It seems to let air pass through the truck, and keeps the exhaust out. If I put just the back window down - I choke on the exhaust. Soon I will be putting in a dual exhaust, and I figured I would have the driver side exit in front of the left rear tire, just so I can put the back window down.

The back window problem is not just with the Bronco's. It has happened with everything from station wagons, Bronco's, Blazers, etc. that the back window opens. The back of the vehicle creates a void in the air (the reason Nascar cars do drafting) and that's the reason the smell is sucked in. Look at a vehicle with an oil or water leak. You would think it would just drip off on the ground but after it has gone down the road the back of the vehicle is coated with spots where the air has pulled it up there. You can drive around town with the window down and it's not too bad. At highway speed it's too much to take.

I have the opposite - at highway i'm fine- City is unbearable- i even tried the air dams some Broncos came with still didn't help. Some guys have said putting the exhaust exit inbetween the door and the back tire eliminates it- But I actually failed inspection because of that one time- Crazy Pa laws. -Bob

Thats exactly how I have mine mounted now, and it is not a problem at all. I have had other Broncos that had issues with exhaust coming in the rear window, but not this one.
BTW: My exhaust exits about 1 foot aft of the right rear tire, with a slight down turn (like 5* or so)......no problems with exhaust at highway or city speeds!

You are supposed to crack the front windows, at least, if you are driving with the rear one down. There have actually been deaths of children riding in the "jump seats" of older model station wagons - the back window was wide open with the fronts closed and the kids were overcome with carbon monoxide. You don't see those jump seats anymore - and if you did, there would surely be an interlock to prevent the back window from opening when the car was running, or at least when the jump seats were up.

Having your exhaust go out the side is good too, but some fumes can still get in there. However my 90's exhaust exits in the stock location and I do not get any odors in the truck. You should check the engine's state of tune.

thank you, my engine is not in the best state of tune I just rebuilt the carb, and think I should have put a smaller main jet in it. the old one looks really big almost like it has been drilled out. I think it is running quite rich. started back firing on me turned down the idle mixture a little which has helped. timing is right on now. It was pulling vacume straight from the manifold, not switched. way advanced at idle. getting the thing running right is a priority It is amazing how poorly some people maintain their vehicles. It usually takes me quite a while to get all the left over bugs out of a new ride.

Same "stationwagon effect" problem here. My exhaust is 90 degrees out behind the passenger rear wheel. (stock) Perhaps I will try angling down a bit.

I have always had the same problems on my 88 and on my 90. Even with the stock setup it was bad when you got your foot into. My solution, leave the window up.

on my 96 - stock exhaust - i don't smell exhaust, both 79s - not stock exhaust i do. Word to the wise.........never drive with rear window down, you can not smell carbon monoxide.
Take the top off and drive it like it should be driven

I thought cars/Broncos produce carbon dioxide.....not carbon monoxide. There is no way that you cant smell exhaust fumes.
