swapping 360 for a 460

i have a '71 3/4 ton highboy p/u. i've been trying to replace a 360 ci engine with a 460 ci engine. i've bolted the bell housing on before putting it in and the engine turned over. after putting engine in truck with about 3/8" gap between bell housing and back of engine the engine locks up i can't see where anything is rubbing or binding up can anyone give me any suggestions? i would appreciate it cause i'm out of ideas thanks. Vern

i assume that its a manual trans by stating you bolted up the bellhousing once before. is the input shaft aligning with the splines in the clutch correctly? and if its an automatic you might not have the torque convertor seated all the way onto the input shaft. that will stop it from closing up on the back of the block. if you try to force it you will destroy the front pump. spin the convertor as you push it back. there are two seperate sets of splines in the convertor. hope this is some help.

thanks for replying

yes it is a 4 speed manual transmission. i used the plastic rod to center the clutch and flywheel assembly and there is no resistance until i get down to that last 3/8" gap.

Hopefully you have the correct cluch disk. Most likely the splines on the input shaft are not going in thru the cluch disk or the throw out bearing holder isn`t in place. Sometimes I need to step on the cluch petal when installing the motor/transmission to help with the alignment.

do ya have a diafram clutch or a 3finger clutch either if ya have the 3finger one its probably hittin the bell a diafram wont hit then if the pilot bushing sits toward the end of the crank itll hit the splines when i do the 460 swap i use a pilot bushing for a 302 from mid 70's it gos in farther its funny a 360 pilot will fit but itll sit at the end and a 302 pilot is small and itll fit to just in ferther dos you clutch fork have a clip style or the ball style?

thanks for helping

i have taken the driveshaft off so that tells me that since i can't see any scarrin on the bell housin and it doesn't lockup when i bolt the bell up, out of the truck that its not hittin the bell housin. since i've dropped the driveshaft am i thinking right that it should turn over even if the splines or clutch don't line up which i feel certain they are. that leaves me to think the splines on the clutch are hittin the shaft that the throwout bearin slides on let me know if i'm wrong i'm using a 3 finger clutch and the flywheel is off the 360 will the balance be off i was told it would'nt be thanks vern

Check the 460 engine forum, there are some knowledgeable members there and you will get an answer quick. Go into the forums listing and go down the list about 1/2 way. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Considering that the motor turns with the clutch and bellhousing installed, and the tranny is about 3/8" from seating all the way, it sounds like the pilot bushing in the crank is the wrong size. When you attempt to tighten the tranny down you are pushing the crank forward in the block and pining it against the thrust bearing not allowing the motor to turn.

Look at the clutch alignment tool that you used, and compare the part that fits inside the pilot bushing with the input shaft on the tranny you're using. It's also possible that the front of the input shaft where it mates to the pilot bushing is to long, and would need to be trimmed down.
