does anyone know why you see some tailpipes "clean" or very light grayish color and then some are black? the reason i'm asking is that my '01 f150 4.2 is getting good mileage, new filter was in it when i bought it used at 59k miles, the plugs are a light tanish color, as "normal" should be, never had engine light on, even plugged in my tester just to see any codes were stored, nothing. so this tells me all should be working fine. the longest trip i've been, was about a 3 1/2 hr drive one way, and still black. I first thought a lot of city driving would do this, but also i don't understand my wives g. marquis '97 , approaching 100k miles, is still very "clean", and she does mostly city driving. I have cleaned the maf sensor, cleaned and regapped the plugs, reset PCM, don't what else to do other than replacing the upstream O2 sensors. I dont know if previous owner used any fuel additives/inj. cleaners that may have caused the sensors to be close to out of range but not quite enough to throw a code. This isn't really a big deal but it "buggs" me. any suggestions? thanks...paul
My 98 F150 w/the 4.6 has always had a black sooty discharge in the exhaust pipe. Been that way since new.
If the engine was a 302 or 289 w/a carburetor then I'd be trouble shooting a rich fuel condition. But with these electronically controlled fuel injected compliant engines, I suspect it's SOP for them.
Perhaps someone else has some input.
