What is this port?

1991 F150 XLT, 302. There is a port on the rear of my 302 engine near the PCV valve. It had a J shaped hose on it with a bolt plugging it. I suspect this was not the intended installation. Does anyone know what this port is for and what the intended install is? I have to pass emissions and would like to make sure I have it right. Thanks.

Pics are in my gallery...here:

Hmmm...it sure would be nice to see some more pics. I can't quite make out where you are in the engine compartment there, your pic is too narrow of an angle. Zoom out some and take another pic and we might be able to help you.

Is it the one in the back of the intake? Or is it in the valve cover? It looks like the PCV hose to me. It should be plugged into the passenger side valve cover, then there should be a hose between the PCV vavle and the back of the upper intake.

I can make out a little bit, it looks like you are standing on the passenger side aiming the camera towards the firewall. I see the side of the blower box, there is one thin plastic tube running into a plastic box, that happens to be a vacuum reservoir. There should be a MAP sensor mounted on top of the blower box, it should be mounted on a metal bracket and have one large vacuum line running to it from the vacuum tree. I can't think of anything else that is back there except the PCV valve.

I've added another gallery picture showing a better view of where the port is located. The port is at the rear of the intake by the firewall. I'm wondering if it is a vacuum port and if it used to go to the PCV valve. The vacuum hose going to the PCV valve now comes from the vacuum tree. Someone T'd into a line and ran the hose to the PCV there. I've shaded that in green on the new photo.

Yes ,that is the PCV ( at least that's what it looks looks like) should be going to back of intake but, I don't see a problem with it where it is at, actually might be easier to get at. On the down side maybe the plug is leaking and you are getting a vaccum leak?

maybe get a closer pics to be positive?

AHA!

What you have there is an upgrade, and won't hurt your emissions at all. The PCV valve is normally connected to a short j-hose that connects to a vacuum port on the rear of the intake. This factory setup is notorious for dumping extra "crud" (from ventilating the crankcase) into the intake right over the #8 piston, sometimes causing premature failure in that cylinder of one form or another. What someone has done to your truck is re-route the PCV valve hose from the original port to the vacuum tree on top of the intake, which will more evenly distribute the "crud" over all the cylinders. Then the factory vacuum port on the back of the upper intake is plugged, with a bolt in your case. A neater re-work would be to remove that bolt and hose, remove the vacuum nipple, and thread a bolt of the appropriate size into the intake tap, sealed with either Teflon tape or pipe dope.

Talking

A bolt is not all that bad, I had bought a truck a few years ago that most of the hoses were plugged, with bullets that fit the hose. Still live rounds, I told my wife if I ever tell her my motor is shot, she will have to believe me.

An upgrade? Fantastic! I do think I now recall some mention of this upgrade at some point in my cobwebbed brain. I will most likely go ahead and replace the bolt and hose by removing the port and plugging it. I will certainly stay away from live ammunition though! Who would have done such a thing?

I have seen sticks before, but never bullets! Glad you got your answers on your question.
