I was going to just have the FMS' ceramic coated, but I'm going to go ahead and get the TM's instead. I like the numbers better.
For what Bob is seeing in performance gains - you would have to spend $600 (probably more) anyway for a chip, intake, and exhaust to get the same power.
Its not like we haven't spent enough money already...
I don't know what I gained with the FMS's because I did so much at the same time (supercharger, intake, MSD, etc). Below are pics of TM's compared to an old set of FMS's. You can see the difference:
Just depends on if you need it or not (what year you have). I have an early 97, so I have the different EGR setup than the late 97 through 2001. I don't have the EGR bung running from the EGR valve to the manifold...
So there's early and late 97s, I'm learning more about this thing every day! Yeah, mine has the EGR port on the top of the right side.
Mine seems to be getting crappy mileage too. The first two tanks I ran through it were towing my boat and it got 13.5. I figured well, that was over a mountain pass and I turned OD off on the hills. Now I'm running around solo and seems like it isn't doing any better (down to 1/4 tank and 220 miles). I'm going to have to go over it and see what has and hasn't been done. I'm hoping the gas filter hasn't been changed being the truck only has 65K on it. It does seem to power out a bit under load.
-Plugs
-Wires
-clean IAC
-clean throttle body
-clean air filter (big one because the OEM cna be rather restrictive when clogged)
-fuel filter
-tire pressure and wear
The 302's in Explorers can be picky at times. I have never gotten 'great' mileage when I have town miles involved. On road trips, I always got over 20 if I could keep my foot out of it and kept it around 70-72, and at least 16-18 around town (that was when I was stock). With everything I've done, around town I get 11-12. We just got back from a 1500 miles trip, and I still averaged 18.5 running 75-85 and still got 21.8 running 70-72 on one tank. Not great, but not bad to me either for what the vehicle is.
I looked it over the day before our trip. The dealership I bought it from had done some work on it. It had the oil changed and an air filter done. The fuel filter still says Motorcraft so I'm hoping it's the original. I got a new one last night. I'm going to change it today. I'll do plugs and wires next.
