'75 f100, 4x4 full time. drums all the way around. i need a "retracting spring" for the front drivers side drum. napa and advance auto could not help me. lots of hardware kits but they are all missing this spring. my haynes manual shows it in the heavy duty drum assembly pics but not in the light duty drums. i am sure this is a standard d44 axle used on 1,000's of f100 4x4's, so why is this spring a mystery to the parts guys and not included in the kits? the one ton hardware kits had the spring, but it was a lot bigger and longer- would not work on my rig i don't think. surely this is not the first one to ever break. i can find one in a junk yard i am sure, but has anyone here had to replace this spring? has anyone found a source for a new replacement? all help appreciated!
well, i can not say i fixed anything yet. i began to think that since no kits come with that spring maybe it is considered not neccessary. i thru the drum back together. in the yard and up on blocks it seems to expand and contract normally. my problem was once in a while i would get this terrible rubbing noise as i came to a stop. maybe the broken spring was binding. anyway, cleaned up and without the retracting spring, a short test drive did not find any probs. the ole girl was just supposed to be a farm truck, but i have had to use her to get back and forth to work lately. so the purpose of this post- if someone should do a search and have the same problem- maybe just remove that broken retracting spring and let the return springs do their job. within a week i should know if it still gets that rubbing noise.
