volare measurement points

hey guys , thanks for the help getting me to this point. the ifs is in . and i need to get the engine and trans mounts in . what i would like to know is does anyone have the measurements of where the trans mount goes ? all the original trans mounts are removed from my frame from a previous owner, there was a toggled together mount that looked homemade but i have no idea if it is anywhere near where it is supposed to be. i have an offset volare trans mount from mid fiftys that i am going to install and then install the motor mounts . i thought if i had a starting point ( trans mount location that is right ) the rest i can manage . the truck will be running a 302 with a c4 or possibly a fmx . thanks

Forget the exact location of trans crossmember for now. Next up is the engine mounts. Did you buy the Volare Motor Mount Puzzle Kit? Or are you fabbing them? Mock up the engine, complete as possible. Exhaust manifolds, oil filter, radiator and fan are HIGHLY recommended before you commit.

55 effie,

what fenders said... mock up your drive train... engine, trans and drive line...get your phasing set and your angles worked out and make sure you've got clearances for all the engine components, steering linkage, exhaust, battery, etc...

you'll have plenty of room for engine/trans ( with the girly engine) BUT it needs to be in the right location... Volare engines usually need to be offset at least an inch to get around that big ole honkin steering box....

it would be great if the radiator was in place also, so you can get the fan/radiator spacing right. You didn't mention what stage of completion your truck is in... but if the cab's on the frame and you can simulate the radiator location you're in pretty good shape... gather up all the scrap 2x4s and tie wire you can find and secure the engine/trans then fab the engine mounts in place... you really have no decision on transmission cross member... it's like us... it has to be where it has to be, based on the final engine placement. Mine was supported/hanging for several months on several thicknesses of tie wire till I got time to fab up a cross member...

after you finally figure out Volare engines mounts ?? the trans mount will be a piece of cake. They are kinda like working a jigsaw puzzle with a mirror.

later
john

I second that on the radiator mount.. I did NOT anticipate the thickness of the radiator that I ended up with (from 75 F150), and have just 3/4 inch clearance from the front of the water pump pulley bolts to the radiator fins on my 460 combo in the 55. Good thing I was plannin on an electric fan already.. it'll just have to be a pusher instead of a puller!..
