im sure this has been posted before, but whatm akes these things ...better or so desireable? this guy (basically a drunk ha) has one in his old 79 and was saying how it has "450 horse stock boy!" wich I dont really believe, my dad said that it went pretty good back in the day but what sets it apart from other motors..or is it even at all?
The 428 CobraJet was Fords replacement for the 427. Longer stroke for more torque at lower RPMs. Medium riser heads and intake with a 735 CFM Holley. A really good hydraulic cam (no adjustment necessary) and way better than stock 390/428 exhaust manifolds. Not only was it more streetable but it had the same horsepower fiqures. The 335 @ 5200 was just that, at 5200. Of course factory stock CJ with the auto tranny shifted at 6000 RPM's all by themselves in drive. 450hp is a bit of a stretch, but 425 hp at the flywheel was accurate and as much as 375 at the rear wheels was also doable with a 4 speed. If I ever find one or get the parts to build another I will, without a second though.
yea the guy here said he'd never sell it. another 'rare' motor that isnt a ford that im curious about its I think its chevys 302 zapper, again my ol man said that a guy had on and it just went, and was extremely loud!
An original Z28 issue Chev 302 would be a great motor to get ahold of. Might have some collector value. Those motors had big valves and hot cams, not much on low end. But hook it down to 2nd gear and gas it and away it goes.
If it's 4 bolt mains (I think they were) and the right internals, you can run it to 9000 rpm just for fun.
As for the CJ428, again if it's original, grab it. Most lived hard lives and died young at the strip or into a telephone pole. Collector value there bigger than the chev, methinks.
Well Like 85 said...they run good on the pipe...(high revs) not really any TQ to them.. I really dont see 9000rpm coming out of one? I do know they well run 7000rpm..but past that? I think its an accident waiting for a happening!!
I have an Uncle that had the Z camico...(camaro) with the 302 and a 4 speed...never saw one with an Auto behind it? Probably not enough Tq..to get the convertor spinning?
Back in the dark ages a buddy in the service had one of the 302's that had the 2 4V mini-rat roaster (mouse roaster, we called it) the short cross ram set up. Any way he could get it to run just above the National record in AHRA in pure stock. It gets worse, his girl friend bumped the record twice with it. She had reflexes to die for and weighed 40 lbs less.
One of My Uncle's, I dont know why I keep calling them my Uncle's? there are but there only 8 and 10 years older Gearheads than I am...LOL.. Got Gearheads all over the family... But I'am the only one that stuck up for Fords??
Anyway the one that had the 302 Z......Raced another Uncle's 413 Fury wedge..and damn near beat him!!
From what i understand The d/z 302 was for ...now i dont know the correct terminoligy but it was something like GT race series or TA, I dunno like Trans Am or something like that. Anyways It was made from a destroked 327....I dont know anything about chevys but thats what I was told.
Yep the Trans-am series is right. AMC ran their smallblock special on speed yesterday and the Chevy 302 was one of the engines covered. Something like 470-490 hp for the Chevy 302 in Trans-am trim.
G.
in T/A trim, the smokey yunick modified/chevy dz 302 had 482 hp and about 100 less in tq... my dad had a 68 rs/ss camaro with the dz 302 and the muncie m-22 4 speed behind it, which he called the "rock-crusher", im guessing since the gearing in the tranny was so spread out... but we wrecked it, and it sure sucked to be the tree we hit(105 mph on the speedo was peaked)
Yep thats what the M-22 were known as "RockCrushers" because they are a tough tranny!! I ran one in my 69 GTO Judge!! I loved it!! the Yenko was a Bitchin Camico!!
