Any Ford Focus Owners Here?

I know there are a few out there.

I just bought a 2002 Focus Sedan SE with the 2.0 Zetec and automatic transmission. I seem to be getting around 20-24 MPG in town. I thought that was kind of low. But, maybe not?

That is with the air-conditioning on about 2/3 the time. I also do not drive out of control (but I am no Grandpa either). So is that about right or no?

I've looked at enough of them that I should own one. The only problem is I can't find one with the options I want..

That is on the heavy side for sure.
I would expect a worst of 25, and up to low 30s a possibility.
Small automatic cars are VERY dependant on the way you drive. Try driving like a grandpa and see how you go.
Otherwise, is there any mechanical problems with it you can notice?
How is the engine performance?

There is no check engine light and everything else seems fine. Engine performance seems fine. It's weird...

We have a 2005 Focus wagon, bought it last November. 2.0-liter engine and automatic, and the wagon is IIRC the heaviest of the Focuses (Focii?). On a 500-mile road trip one weekend it ran around 33 mpg. Around town, seems to be high 20s. 20-24 seems kinda low.

i have a 1998 contour 2.0l zetec that used to get 27 as a total mpg average. It doesn't get much better on the highway since it only has 125 hp. The mpg has gone down slightly since it now has 145,000 miles on it. Also, since this is a small car, when i drive it hard in city traffic with the ac going, the mpg drops like a rock.

Seems about right for heavy foot with A/C in city traffic. You should keep a log over a one month period to really be sure. Avg 24 mpg would be about right for a lot of stop and go city traffic with maybe 1/3 being highway.

Well, I tried to pay extra attention to the car today while driving and it almost seems like there is a slight miss. The car has just over 40,000 KILOMETRES on it. The check engine light works but is not on. I know there is a potential EGR problem on these cars. Maybe I should look into it?

Well, I gased up today. I drove until my gas light came on and then drove to the gas station.

The car took 40.318 Litres and I drove 420 kilometres. Half was city driving and half was highway. I left the car idling for about 15 minutes as well with the A/C running. I also had the A/C on most of the time when driving as well.

MPG works out to about 24.5 Seems a little better.

-Matt

P.S. I guess the EGR problem on this car was fixed under waranty.

We filled the wagon up this evening. About 230 miles, 9.5 gallons (say, 368 km, ~36 liters), gives 24.2mpg, or a bit more than 10km/liter. Mostly in-town driving with two short hops on the highway, with a/c running pretty much the entire time.

My wife and I had a 2001 Focus for 4 1/2 years. In city driving it always got right at 25 mpg, with or without the A/C on. In highway driving it got up to 33 mpg even driving 75 mph with the a/c on. It was very consistent in the mileage from the time it was broken in until we traded it off on the Hybrid Escape.

Ours was an SE model sedan with the 2.0 liter and an automatic.

24 mpg doesn't seem too bad depending on how you drive. Maybe change the plugs, filters and check the air pressure in the tires and see what happens.

My 94 Escort (1.9l, auto, 4 door) consistently gets 33-36 MPG on the highway. That's driving 75-80 on the way home from work. You'd think that a smaller lighter car (I assume the Focus is smaller and lighter, and the technology is better than 11 years ago) would do a little better than that. I have gotten over 38 MPG in the past, but only once or twice, and I rarely run the A/C.

Our Focus wagon is a little bigger than the '99 Escort wagon, and quite a bit bigger than my '95 Tracer. It is also a LOT quicker. My '95 Tracer (1.9, 5-speed) will get consistently 38-40 on the highway, ~60-65 MPH, and 33-35 around town. Could be that the Focus sedan and small hatchback do better, the wagon is considerably larger than the others and I'd imagine heavier also.

No idea what our Focus gets for gas mileage, but I do know it gets better mileage when my wife drives than when I drive - I tend to drive it more aggressively than she does.
