Hey guys how hard is it to put stacks on a 78 SB. And I am wondering what they would sound like with a 300. Just got the idea and wondered what open pipes on 3" stacks would sound like. Has anyone done it before?

So what are the yellow puddles under Chevys?

 

I haven't tried it, nor would I. I think that dual "stacks" would really take away from the I-6's torque being there would be no back pressure, I don't think it would be that great a sounding either. If you try it let all of us know how it makes power for you, and make an audio file for us to listen to!

 

Stacks throw crud all over the roof of the pickup. Straight (no muffler) stacks will sound like a baby bull wagon and will probably net you a ticket. Imho..it will sound like a ricer on steroids and they sound like cr*p to me!

 

 

Well, if you are running a stock exhaust manifold, you only have one 2" pipe coming off of your engine now, and you are talking about 2 3" pipes..... that's a pretty drastic change. As far as backpressure, don't get your panties in a bunch over it; it's not as important (IMHO) as many make it out to be, although you do need at least a few feet of reasonable diameter tubing to make an engine run right. Anyway, you could use a y-pipe to split the single pipe into two pipes, run to the stacks and step it up to fit. Are the stacks you're looking at baffled or muffled? If they are, you are set, but if not, I would use at least a 12" glasspack (bare minimum-still very loud) in between the engine and the stacks. You DEFINITELY need some type of muffler. I am currently running dual 2" straightpipes on my 300, not really b/c I want to, but because I am not driving it often right now, and when I fabricated my exhaust system, I didn't have money for mufflers. It sounds great at idle, but louder than any other truck on earth when you step into, and its not a mechanically pleasant sound either. It sounds like a sickly semi. Soon, I will be putting on a set of glasspacks to take the edge off. Your other option would be to swap to a set of dual outlet EFI exhaust manifolds (like I did) or headers and running true duals to your stacks. No matter what, use (a) muffler(s) of some type, at least just to kill the buzz.

 

I used to have an 83 F-100 with a 300 six, I disconnected the exhaust at the manifold, and everyone said it sounded like a tractor or and old WWII jeep. I thought it was kind of cool, but no one else was impressed.
