sorry but this may be a dumb question. does anyone know what the difference is between the 304 and 409 mbrp exhaust systems? is it the product number or the type of stainless steel?

I'm pretty sure the 304 stainless is thicker, hence the price difference.

304 SS is truly stainless and stays shiny. It is highly workable, and can be easily formed (drawn) into shapes. Readily formed into exhaust shapes.

409 SS forms an adherent oxide coating when heated, which protects it against further corrosion. Good for the hottest part of the exhaust system, the muffler, where heat is dissipated and moisture might collect when it cools. oxide surface is brown, not shiny.

Ain't Google wonderful?

I have the MBRP 409 SS exhaust. The pipes are 409. The muffler and tip are 304. I still like the looks. I was not looking for show quality, but longevity at a reasonable price. The pipes look good with just a simple cleaning with a pressure washer.

05f250fx4,

Not dumb if you don't know the answer! 409 is basically the same material as your stock system, it's a magnetic stainless and will over time depending on where you live get a gray/brown look and some spots on it. 304 is a non magnetic stainless and has a high content of chromium and nickel in it, hence the extra cost. For all practical purposes it will look the same as the day you take it out of the box no matter what you subject it to on the road. The 304 MBRP systems we sell also come standard with a dual wall tip that is extra on other systems.

Call us if you have any questions etc.

Thumbs up

Small world, I purchased a 4" turbo back MBRP T304 system from Mark a few years ago. A fine system, cooled down the exhaust temps, cooled down the oil temps when I tow my 12K fifth wheel. Gets on the boost quicker, still looks great, sounds great.

This is my first post here (cool site), was surfing and found this on MBRP, had to chime in.
