There were 2 systems used; '66 - '70 the Bendix system and from '68 or '69 to '79 the Ford system was used. (The later gearbox was made by Saginaw, and is often called the Saginaw box.)
You will find that the length of the steering column will be dictated by the box you use.
You best bet is to search on this topic. The best place is this forum. Be sure to note only the advice for years '65 and up. The steering and suspension was radically different prior to '65.
