I'm trying to replace the seal on the steering ram on this 77 250 4x4 highboy. Its a bendix power assist unit,it has a pump/gearbox/control valve/ and the power ram where most fords have their steering stabilizer, you know that thing that looks like a shock absorber. Well none of the part stores have any listing nor are they familiar with this setup. I tell them that ford used a garrison and or bendix still having no luck . CAN ANYONE HELP thanx.
Not to worry!...I took mine to the local napa and they sent it off and 3 weeks later and 300 bucks it was a.o.k.----If you have a ford tractor dealer nearby take the slave cylinder with you and I'll bet they can rebuild it for you. All that slave cylinder really is...is a Double acting hydraulic cylinder which is nothing really special. Lots of 60's and 70's tractors used a system that was almost like the power assist system on our 77.5 and earlier model trucks , which is where ford probably got the idea in the first place. If you leave it with napa....make them QUOTE you a price before they send it off. I would go to a couple of the other major parts chains and see if they can help you and get a quote as well. And, if all else fails call this place in nevada as they are supposed to be able to rebuild both the control valve AND the slave cylinder.....Independent Hydraulics , Lake Havasu City , nv. , (928)854-1022. I think that they maybe alittle on the $$$ side!!!fd
