'79 Steering Shaft Help

I have a '79 F-250 4x4 with a tilt 4 speed column. I am trying to get the end of the steering shaft out of the steering box. I cant get get the retaining clip out of the steering box that holds the shaft in. I know that in my '73 that the clip pops right out with a screwdriver. What is the trick to getting it out. I want to put the column in my '73. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

'79 Steering Shaft Help

Wouldn't ya know I was out freezin my cheeks off on Sunday doing this very thing on my 78 F250? Anyway, the 78's and 79's are pretty much the same and I just pushed the clip out, there are two slots inthe cup, and then wiggled it like a madman. The other alternative would be to take the cup off the steering gear box input shaft by removing the nut on the stud in the clamp, slip the stud all the way off because it is slid into a depression on the shaft, and then depending on how badly you want to reuse the gear box and the cup start "persuading" them apart with a hard rubber mallet. Mine actually came off very easily once I realized you have to totally remove the stud. My steering shaft was toast though so I got a Borgeson unit... can't wait to get it in and feel that tight steering
