Yet another Fuel Guage problem from another person
I just bout my 94 Explorer, used and abused it may be I fell in love with it the moment I test drove it..well anyways on to the problem.. when the key is either out or just put into the ignition the fuel guage reads between 1/4 to 1/2 a tank which I believe is how much gas is really in it, but when I start it the guage drops to E and doesn't move.. is there a short somewhere? should I try the test with removing the wire from sending unit as many have been advised to do? any help would be great as I'm probably going out of town on the 5th and think it would be a bad idea to have to guess when im getting low while driving down the interstate..

Yes. That is the only sure way to know if the guage and wiring are good. If I had to guess, your sending unit is probably bad in the tank, but the test will verify this.
Hmm.. means dropping the tank or figuring out which of the wires running along the chassis is the wire for the sending unit....any idea on the wire colors? sure make things alot faster..
If you can get to it, I would just un-plug the connector from the gas tank. And then shove a piece of scrap wire up into the correct place on the connector and then touch the other end of the scrap wire to a shiny place on the frame. Someone should be in the cab watching the guage, unless you can make the wire stay in the connector and on the frame.
I am not sure if the needle will peg to full when it's grounded, or to empty. Ford changed the way their guages worked in the 1990's, and it's hard to keep track of which way it's supposed to go. But it doesn't matter, as long as it is full scale with the plug unplugged, and then opposite full scale with the wire grounded. That will verify it's working.
