hey buddy
i put a mallory coil on my truck along with an accel cap and rotor and ford racing 9mm plug wires. there was more of a difference with this than any other mods ive done
I just put on a MSD blaster coil, plug wires, MSD box, borge warner cap and roto, and new plugs and there is a hugh difference. Gas milage is better too. I gapped my plugs to .05. I might try .055 later after i run some more gas thur it.
ha, sweet..im gonna give that coil a whirl...see what it does . My cap, rotor, and plugs arent that old, but I might throw in some new wires just for the heck of it.
I would say the coil itself isn't going to do squat but it mixed with a fully upgraded ignition would be right. The MSD ignition box is what generally gives the performance gain, otherwise a high power ignition is just unnecessary on a stock or relatively stock engine. Spend the money on something else.
Well if you've done everything else like headers, duals, K&N intake and stuff what else is there to do? I figure that this blaster coil is going to work better than a stock one and even still I can get the MSD box later. Some of us have to take it a little at a time. I don't make alot of money. So an engine overhaul I might have to do but even still I can install the MSD coil on a rebuilt engine too. We'll see what it does.
For the $250 bucks you could look into mods like 1.7 roller rockers instead of the 1.6s...or a better intake manifold....etc....it's time to dive into real mods that actually do something for ya...
If you're tight on cash like most of us are, then you've got to think more about the bang for the buck. Not just whatever simple things you can upgrade...a lot of those are expensive for what they do to a stock motor, which is typically not much.
I'd rather spend $250 on roller rockers that get me 20-30 solid hp vs an ignition box that gets me 5 maybe 10 tops.

yeah but that internals. If i was to change my roller rockers I'd probably have to change my cam, which would me rebuilding my 302 cause who know how much hp it can take before she blows. Like things like this aren't easy to just throw in there. The motor has to be ripped out to do that. Unless you are thinking I could do it while its still installed....But yes an air intake would make a big difference. Can you put one on a speed density motor tho and get a gain?
You don't have to change cams to do roller rockers, just take the valve covers off and change the rockers on top. You can stick with the stock 1.6 ratio and just take advantage of the fact that they are roller...or go to 1.7 ratio for extra power. You'd have to do some research to make sure there is enough valve clearance (I think there is so that is why I am mentioning this). The 1.7 rocker just pushes the valve down further and makes it as if you put a higher-lift cam in there. More air through the motor.
If you're going to get into mods like this though, you'll have to look into a MAF conversion. You don't have to buy the kit, get a mustang computer and do the wiring yourself. It wouldn't be necessary for the 1.6s but probably for the 1.7s, but again...maybe not...I havn't done the research but I'm sure you could find out easily enough.
All I'm really saying is, don't waste your money on mods that don't hardly do anything for ya. It would be more practical to save that money and put it in the "engine rebuild" fund and just leave it alone for now. A $250 MSD box could of bought you a nice hi-po cam for a rebuilt shortblock instead...
Don't be afraid to jump in and get your feet wet, we all have a budget to work with, its how you manage it that gets you what you want. When you don't have a lot of money to spend, you've got to spend it in the right places to get what you want. Therefore, it's critical as to where you spend the money so that you can end up with a well rounded package you enjoy.

My truck was in need of a tune so I spent a little more on quality parts. I put the MSD blaster II coil, 9mm ford racing wires, MSD cap and rotor, and new sparks in my truck. Didn't really seem to make a big difference. You could tell that the engine was a little more responsive. I did put headers, dual flowmasters, and K & N air filter on my truck about a month or two before, so that may have played a difference too.
