'93 Explorer Knock

My '93 4 liter explorer has a slight knock on acceleration so I now use mid grade fuel. This helped the problem alittle bit. However when I pull a small trailer it knocks badly. What I need to know is do I have a knock sensor and where is it? Also could it be a stretched timing chain? With the engine being distributor-less I have no way to time it.
